Forgot Santa, Philly Boos TBS

Thursday, October 22, 2009

TBS might have had one of the worst set of broadcasts a network has every had, and the fact that people were singing the praises of Buck and McCarver....speaks volumes. Following the Phillies' series clinching win on Wednesday night, TBS' Ernie Johnson made his way to the podium to present the team's brass with the trophy. Ernie, being the true professional that he is, decided to announce the pleasure it was for his network to call the NLCS. Bad idea....

I don't say this very often, actually ever, but THANK YOU PHILADELPHIA! There is no better way to voice your displeasure for a network than they way you just demonstrated. I commend you, and promise to never bring up you guys booing Santa Claus....EVER AGAIN!

(P.S.- Don't get me wrong about Ernie Johnson. The reaction by him is the reason why he's one of the best in the business.)

TBS was decent last year, right? What the heck happened?

I wasn't watching much of the TBS telecast during the playoffs, but what was so bad? AA hasn't talked much about the playoffs this year.

They just got an email from Amsterdam and Eck asked what else was he doing over there... Nice.

TBS showed The Steve Harvey Show instead of the first inning of a Rays-Sox game. And even when they were broadcasting baseball, they weren't very good.

Yeah I was glad Buck and McCarver finally came along... If TBS jettisoned Chip Caray and Dick Stockton, they might have a chance, but as long as they insist Chip is a number one play by play guy.... I think I'd like to see EJ get a shot, he as a type of voice that won't get on your nerves, Caray... Ugh I just want to shoot my TV...

Thanks for no longer bringing up Philly fans booing Santa. You do realize that that incident took place in 1968, right? The youngest fans still around are pushing 60 years old. Should we continue to condemn people in Dallas for shooting Kennedy? There was a murder outside of Dodger Stadium last year when a Dodger fan killed a Giants fan (might have been the other way around). The Santa thing is being cliche. I'm surprised you or anyone in the media ever brings it up. Just so tired.

Worry not, Ernie, those boos are not intended for you. You just happen to be the one standing there under the same TBS umbrella as Chip Caray. Those boos were his boos. My goodness he's awful. Why MLB thought selling out to TBS is a good idea is beyond me.

Love Ernie but TBS is awful. Chip Caray is the worst play-by-play man in baseball (Rick Sutcliffe is just as bad as an analyst). It seems like he's not even watching what's going on. Last night Manny swings at a pitch that almost hits him and he hails Chad Durbin for jamming him. Are you watching the same game as everyone else Chip? Just one of many examples.

Chip Caray actually said in last night's game, "this is not a walkoff situation" during the 5th inning.

In case, you know, you thought that could somehow be possible.

Worst. Announcer. Ever.

Chip is the worst! He's laughable at best. I would think everyone knows who EJ is, he doesn't announce what network he works with when he's doing a trophy ceremony for the NBA however.

Does George Lopez have a show?

No joke, I watched the game without sound last night. Turned on some music. When any announcer ("Chip", as in "He's a piece of Chip") makes me miss Joe Buck...

Yeah, who is this George Lopez you speak of? And who was Frank Caliendo?

I agree with the Philly boooo-ing of Chip Caray and Ron Darling; however, Buck Martinez, in my opinion, was a pleasure. He brought much insight regarding the coaches and players and his knowledge of the game to the telecast. Much better than Tim McCarver anyday.

Ron Darling, Jon Gruden ... the latest in a long line of alleged analysts whose best claims to fame are repeating what's been said before.
Chip Caray had a dreadful series, no question.

They are still better then Fox, I'd rather see the Yankees play on TBS then fox anyday. Chip is bad, but not horrible like Buck. And McCarver is terrible. Stating obvious facts like no one has every heard of this game before. I personally like Darling, and from listening to Buck Martinez talk about strategy makes me wonder how he ever won a game managing.

I have a solution that I think everyone would like. Take one person from each teams home broadcast crew. They would know more about each team, fans would get a perspective from each team. And we wont get this idiots that are banking on there daddies name. So for example, Fox would take the Angels play by play guy, and Ken Singleton from the YES network. therefore we should get one play by play guy, as I doubt that we can't find 1 good announcer out of the 4 play by plays (one tv for each team and one radio for each team) of each team. And 4 color guys.

And I liked TBS strike zone thing, let me know immeaditly how close the pitch was and where the pitcher has thrown in the past to help guess the location if the camera doesn't show the signs.

@ locklesslocker: That TBS strikezone thing was good......when it was not way off on the location of the pitches....which was pretty much most of the series.

i like your idea, locklesslocker, except why would you want to subject yourself to a game called by Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler...they are in the Grade A Idiot bin with Chip Carry

Questionmark, at least they would know about the teams. Instead of reading out of the media guide during the game stating obvious facts like A-rod had a good year because this is his whatever consecutive year with this many home runs. And I'm hoping that we will be able to find one good announcer from each team.

You can imagine how dreadful it is to be a Braves fan. Mercifully, Chip is only a part-time play by play guy (on one of the two networks that divide up Braves games). Fingernails on a chalkboard. A real shame because his dad was so great.

And EJ is a super class act away from the camera. More than once I've seen him at a restaurant joyfully feeding his adopted disabled son by hand.

First of all, I am stunned at how much Chip Carey has regressed as an announcer. I remember him as play by play man for both the Orlando Magic and the Cubs and he seemed pretty good but now he has become a buffoon. I wonder if TBS could work a deal with NESN to have Don Orsillo work as their national guy. He has become a very good play-by-play guy for the Red Sox. Now if WEEI could only dump Joe Castiglione.

ok, locklesslocker, but you're still going to have "long fly ball" on a simple pop up behind third base in foul territory with those guys...honestly, the Angels don't have any good play-by-play guysm just guys that kiss Arte Moreno's ass...Rory Markas WAS good, but he's been dumbed down by working with Mark Gubizca...Vin Scully is the only good voice in California
