Randy Moller Is My New Favorite Announcer

Friday, February 13, 2009

I'm mad at all of you Hockey fans out there. How could months pass by and none of you even alerted me to the greatness that is Florida Panthers' radio announcer, Randy Moller. Moller, an ex-player, has taken a fondness to using pop culture references during goal goals, and lucky for us, the Dan LeBatard Show has decided to put a collection of them on Youtube. I don't think you're ready for this....

So so good. I've already listened to it three times, and I hear something new each time. My personal favorite has to be the "She blinded me with Science" one, but "Ma! Where's the Meatloaf?!" is a close second.

This guy is abslutly tterrible and should be fired as soon as possible. This guy is an utter clown ans should not be in the booth at all. After listening to this I can't take this guy serieous as an announcer.

Games are supposed to be fun, but this guy seems to care more about his dopey catchphrases after every single goal than the actual game. After a while it gets annoying.

Isn't this how Matt Vasgersian got his big break as a Brewers announcer, with pop culture references on home run calls?

Aside: Tony Kornhole is wearing a Snuggie on PTI...why?

Clearly the best one is Fozzie the Bear's Wakka Wakka...

And jesus, lighten up a little. This guy rocks, and it doesn't appear to be taking anything away from the game/announcing...

This guy's good, no doubt, but you need to listen to some Mike Lange. The man's a legend and in the hockey hall of fame for a reason.

Here's a good place to start.

The way it works is that Lebatard solicits the phrases and then presents them to Moller, who chooses which one to use.

BTW, Moller is the only former player doing pxp in the NHL. All the others are colour analysts.

It's not that he can't use pop culture references, or even have fun. Most of them have no relation whatsoever to the goal that had just happened. I like non-sequiturs, but the shrill voice and the lack of context just wasn't working.

He's stealing Mike Lange's act.

What we should do is beat him like a rented mule, go buy a drink for him and his dog, scratch my back with a hacksaw, and he just lost his liquor license.

I'll say it again, the problem that I have with this guy is, that after he comes up wtith a catchprashse, he wants to top himsef on teh next goal with another moronic catchprase. And to me, tht's annoying. Because the announcer is becoming the story insteeas of the actual game. That's wrong in my opinion.

I've never heard the guy other than this. If he's a good announcer and he does this then that's awesome, but if he sucks it would annoy me.

But he sounds like an excitable guy, and therefore someone I may like to listen to for a hockey broadcast.

But I love Wakka-Wakka thrown in, and then "Who's your daddy and what does he do?"

I'm with you James Craven. He's stealing Mike Lange's act except he's quoting from movies and song rather than those off-the-wall quotations Lange comes up with. Otherwise, Moeller's not all that bad--at least he's not screamin' Dave Mishkin of the Lightning.

He should pay Mike Lange of the Penguins for ripping off Mike's style.

JFreak: "Big Digger should pay James craven for ripping off Craven's comment."

And the JFreak wins 1,000,000,000 interwebs for that comment!

1. Randy Moller's calls are made of awesome.
2. He doesn't do them after every goal, it's usually only once per game and sometimes the opportunity doesn't even present itself if the Panthers are down.
3. The references are to pop culture, not Mike Lange's style.
4. Moller and Lindsay have actually gotten to be quite good together. They didn't start that way but they are improving alot.
5. All you people bashing Moller, have you actually listened to a single period of his play by play? We Panther fans would appreciate it, lord knows we need the audience.
6. Why do people rush to shit on anything fun in sports? I know you just wish you could swap your play by play guy for Moller.
7. Red Deer!!!!
8. Tomas Vokoun stopped the last shootout attempt against the Rangers on Fri night and Moller yells, "They call him the Demolition Man!" That's just awesome and you simply can not hate on the man.

Yay, the Panthers get mentioned for being good! I watch nearly every Panthers game on TV, but aren't close enough to hear the radio broadcasts. I'll seek it out and join in on the fun.

Go Panthers!

Sad thing is, that three-minute clip contained every goal scored by the Panthers this season.

Moller does a credible job at play-by-play, but he really needs to step away from his TiVo once in a while. A few of the gags were chuckle-worthy, but mostly, it's like listening to two drunken thirty-five-year-old ex frat-boys trying to act "relevant" in a college bar.

Read this article for better understanding. It's all in good fun, he doesn't come up with them (usually), and he doesn't want it to take away from the goal or the game. Jeez, have some fun guys.

http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/columnists/barry-jackson/story/819139.html

"From Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald last December, the inside scoop on Moller's goal calls:
Moller takes suggestions from listeners during a crossover with Le Batard and Weiner on nights of Panthers games, jots down the best, and uses them at moments he deems appropriate. He saves some that he likes but has no opportunity to use that night. He said hundreds of fans have e-mailed him with suggestions, including some from Western Canada who hear the broadcasts on satellite radio.
"We're having a blast with it," Moller said. "I take the position very seriously, but I don't take myself too seriously. But if we're down 5-0 with two minutes left and score a goal, I'm not going to do something. It doesn't fit the situation."
The Panthers have been supportive -- team president Michael Yormark "knows I won't go over the line," Moller said -- and Moller is careful to show restraint. "I absolutely stay away from anything that could be perceived as controversial or racial or derogatory," he said. "And I don't think we need the goal calls to become bigger than the goal itself. I don't want it to become a sideshow. If the mood and timing are right, I will continue this."

Now he's ripped off one from Buffalo's Rick Jenerette:

"Top shelf! Where Mrs. Moller hides the peanut butter!"

The line from Buffalo:

"Top shelf where momma hides the cookies!"

Enough to make me toss my cookies.
