St. Petersburg Bowl Open Thread

Saturday, December 20, 2008

Game: St. Petersburg Bowl
Teams: Memphis Tigers (6-6) vs. South Florida Bulls (7-5)
Location: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL. If you hated this stadium during the MLB playoffs, you're gonna like it less today.
Announcers and Network: Sean McDonough, Chris Spielman, and Rob Stone, ESPN2
Start Time: 4:30 PM EST. Switch to brown liquor by this point.
Odds: USF (-11.5)
S2N's Pick: Take Memphis to cover, pick the Bulls to win on the theory that Matt Grothe is always good for a couple of WTF-type interceptions. Still, this is a virtual home game, as the USF campus is in very nearby Tampa.

21 Comments:

"Rob Stone is a long time resident of this area, and finally made his way into the building in September when the Tampa Bay Rays were all the rage." - McDonough

"Thank you, Bandwagon Rob." - McDonough.

They're off to a rousing start.

Oh wow, a lot of empty seats in Tropicana Field... just like a typical Rays game!

I've been to the stadium quite a few times before, and it's not that bad, I swear. It was possible for me to attend this very game, but I have prior plans for tonight.

Oh yeah, and the sponsor of this game being a scam product that doesn't really work well at all is befuddling. I would have preferred The Snuggies St. Petersburg Bowl or the Shamwow! St. Petersburg Bowl instead.

McDonough just called Rob Stone, Bandwagon Rob, who said he never been in Tropicana field until this Sept. to watch the Rays. Even though he has lived in the Tampa area for a long time.

South Florida's helmets are awful.

Mighty Putty is sponsoring this bowl, too?

Dec 20, 2008, 4:37:00 PM

Well, I can't say I'm too familiar with Mighty Putty, although I don't know all of Billy Mays's products.

Then again, I think that Memphis's defense doesn't really work well at all, judging by this drive. But hey, at least this announcers know whether a player got the ball in for a touchdown before going out of bounds or not...

Horrible idea. Simulcast the T.V. broadcast with the radio for a live game.

I'm surprised the Cash4Gold people didn't pony up the money for a sponsorship. Those commercials are on ESPN non-stop.

/last infomercial reference for me of the day

"Bring that shirt up, we can re-gift it." - McDonough, after Stone hijacks the broadcast with B.J. Upton, Andy Sonnanstine, and Scott Kazmir.

You know, why can't Billy Mays himself sponsor the Bowl. He is a Tampa Bay area resident if I'm not mistaken...

On a somewhat related note, the spokesperson for Shamwow seems as if he does those cheesy shell games on a New York City street...

Those magicjack commercials are like infomeerials. They're horrible.

When was the last time Fowler was in the studio for a halftime?

Dec 20, 2008, 6:32:00 PM

Fowler used to be the host for Thurs. night college hoops a few years ago (I think as late as 2001?) and used to cover the Final Four as well.

@S2N, you have to check out the California High School football championships. Our buddy Petros Papadakis is calling the action with Greg Pappa. They are calling the action on Comcast

Spielman: "Hall's got that Kent Tekulve sidearm release. Who'd he pitch for?"
McDonough: "The Pittsburgh Pirates."
Spielman: "He was a pitcher, right?"

Pretty sure Rob Stone has been to Tropicana Field before this past Sept...Bill Simmons had a column with pictures that included him and Stoner going to a Red Sox game in Tampa a year or two ago...

anon, it was a joke. Stoner is a season ticket holder.

I can't believe they dug up the video of Jim Leavitt getting stopped on a two-point conversion in 1969!

Dec 20, 2008, 7:41:00 PM

"The Grass isnt always greener." - McDonough on coaching moves.

"the Bowl is off to a good start." - Spielman, good except for the 27 point lead

Seeing Jim Levitt getting the Gatorade Treatment in a white shirt isn't neccessarily a good thing.
