NFL Open Thread - Week 15 Late Games

Sunday, December 14, 2008

The best game of the afternoon: Pitt heads to Balamur for the follow up to September's OT win by the Steelers in Heinz Field. I won't be watching because CBS has determined that I should care more about New England - Oakland.

Your quick early game recaps:

  • Brian Lumbergh...er, Griese apparently started for Jeff Garcia today (out with a bad calf and possible groin problem due to hot wife) and has thrown a pick and a TD for TB. Matt Ryan's thrown two picks, but the Falcons are still up 10-7 on the strength of Michael Turner. TB is driving right now....and got an FG. Game's in OT, and TB has the ball again.
  • Niners down 14-9 agains the Dolphins; Miami has not broken and hasn't given up a TD in the last 11 quarters or something. Shaun Hill and the SF O is at the 22 of Miami right now. Chad Pennington's thrown two TD passes....and, this game's done because J-Peezy just took Shaun Hill to the ground on 4th down.
  • Buffalo fans will be stringing up J.P. Losman soon. He just got sacked and fumbled, which was recovered for the go-ahead TD by the Jets, and then promptly threw a pick to end it with about 1:30 left in the game. Jersey Bretts, 31-27.
  • The Colts defense has made Dan Orlovsky, Kevin Smith and the rest of the Lions look good. One TD for Smith, one TD for Calvin Johnson, but three rushing TDs for the Colts, and Indy is ahead 28-21.
  • Jacksonville ahead of Green Bay 20-16, Aaron Rodgers was leading a drive but was just picked by Reggie Fucking Nelson. Two TD passes for David Garrard and one rushing TD for MJD.
  • EPIC FAIL in progress for the Bolts in KC: 6 minutes left and the Chiefs are up 21-10. Philip Rivers has done nothing except throw an INT and a bunch of floaters. Tyler Thigpen continues to look good with the pistol formation offense with 1 TD passing and one throwing. Larry Johnson has a TD pass to Tony Gonzalez on the nice trickeration.
  • STRATOSPHERIC FAIL in progress for the Redskins: they are down 10 points to the Bungles in Cincy. Two minutes left. Ryan Fitzpatrick's thrown for a TD and run for one too.
  • No TDs for the Titans and only one for Houston in their matchup. Andre Johnson caught the TD pass. 4 FGs for Tennessee. 13-12, Houston, but the Titans have the ball with about 3 minutes to go.
  • Seattle and St. Louis tied at 20. (Yawns.)

CBS:

Pittsburgh @ Baltimore - Jim Nantz, Phil Simms
Denver @ Carolina - Dick Enberg, Randy Cross, Dan Fouts
New England @ Oakland - Kevin Harlan, Rich Gannon

Fox:

Minnesota at Arizona - Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and Pam Oliver

Falcons win in OT. Brian Baldinger whining for Genius Gruden because Tampa had 2 road games in 6 days in the same frickin time zone, and the longer of the two was at most a three hour flight.

They already had a excuse with Garcia being out.

I'm pretty sure that everytime Dick Stockton open his mouth, he said something that was either obvious ("Someone's going to lose 2 games in a row, unless it's a tie"), gramatically incorrect (From 53-yard out), or just downright stupid (everything else he said). I don't think Baldinger had one insightful comment all afternoon.

Terrible play-calling by Jeff Fiher, going for it on 4th and 3 instead of kicking the go ahead field goal.

ESPN is going to rake him over the coals. Deservedly so.

That Atlanta-Tampa Bay game was great but it had the feel of being played in a library. Is the Georgia Dome that quiet, or does FOX block out the crowd noise so I can get a better listen to the blather that is Dick Stockton/Brian Baldinger?

BTW Tampa to Greensboro is a flight of less than 2 hours, so Charlotte and Atlanta are both less than that. Hush up with that weak excuse Baldy. And after looking at Stockton's pate it would be fair to call them both Baldy.

Jeff Fisher does not kick the 49 yard field goal on 4th and 3 right after the 2-minute warning down 1...must be nice to have a playoff bid already locked up and be able to treat the game like you're playing Madden.

@anon 4:57, I know Bironas can nail that kick...that's part of my astonishment at his not even being sent on the field to try the kick. My reference to Madden is that in the video game I refuse to ever punt.

Dick Enberg is acting like a professor of North Carolina history and geography today. Hopefully he'll be explaining the difference between eastern and Lexington style barbecue soon. If you aren't getting the Panthers game you are missing out on Randy Cross' hellacious mustache...

And CBS refused to send Pats-Raiders into NYC or South Florida. Time for a REGIME CHANGE at CBS!

Fox has Vikings-Cards on in NYC and the on-screen scoreboard didn't include Pats-Raiders, at least not in the 1st quarter.

Anon 5:22, know the rules of Television Broadcasting.

One, their best broadcast team goes to the games with the most importance. And in this case, Nantz/Simms went to Pittsburgh-Baltimore.

Living in Pennsylvania, I get force fed Steelers one week, Steelers the next because the idotis at CBS think all of Pennsylvania is Steelers country...and I live in Philadelphia, which has tons of Eagles fans. it's time CBS takes the old Beano Cook philosophy, "When in doubt, give 'em [insert name of team here]."

James Craven

Its an NFL rule called secondary market. It basically means if there are two NFL teams in your state or another one nearby, you automatically get that game. Its why Steelers games are on in Philly, DC gets force fed the ghetto thug Ravens, and Ohio cities always get Bengals and Browns. It also affects Oak / SF, and the Florida teams.

Anonymous said...
Dec 14, 2008, 5:58:00 PM

@James: Patriots-Raiders affects the Jets and Dolphins, both of whom won earlier. CBS did not schedule the Pats game for NYC or South Florida. Fox sent the Dolphins game into New England (at least those areas with power).

Also, CBS2 in NYC has a policy to show the national telecast when the Jets or Giants are not available.

Steelers' radio play-by-play (Bill Hillgrove?): "And Willie Colon gets fingered for a hold."

Perfect.

An aside: Is there a logical answer as to why the Browns flagship station is running the Steelers radio network broadcast? It just seems odd.

Dec 14, 2008, 6:13:00 PM

Only the Raiders could get an extra point blocked.

Your unlikely performer of the day in fantasy: Tarvaris Jackson and his 4 TD passes. There's still most of the fourth quarter to go, too.

Runner-up: Matt Cassel with 4 TD passes, but doing that against the Raiders downgrades the accomplishment a little.

CBS just ripped the Carolina game from the viewers in, well, Carolina.

Even if you were enjoying that beatdown the Panthers were giving Mike Shanahan and Jay Cutler, you are now doing your lesson plans or balancing your checkbook to the background noise of Jim Nantz and the hum of Phil Simms trying to figure out "how'd I get stuck with this guy" while they call Baltimore-Pittsburgh.

Let me just say FOX rarely did this to me while I was living in Michigan and someone was tearing up the Lions. I got the WHOLE thing.
