Tony Kornheiser's Awkward On-Air Apology

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Well after hearing Kornheiser's fourth quarter apology last night, I decided to run back through the game and find the original "laundry" quote. Here are both that one and the apology spliced together....

"I took high school Spanish, either he said he's not going to be caught, or please pick up my dry cleaning tomorrow." - Tony Kornheiser

"I said something before which I shouldn't have said, I apologize for it. Not my first mistake, undoubtedly won't be my last, but a 100% apology."- Tony Kornheiser

Now personal feelings about Tony Kornheiser's MNF work aside, the fact that the comment was potentially offensive never even crossed my mind. I also understand after the fact that it could be taken as such and that was probably not something you wanted to joke about during a Hispanic Heritage Month spot. In the end, I really think this was a case of Kornheiser being his unfunny on-air self and not saying anything inflammatory, so hopefully he'll get a pass on this one.

91 Comments:

He should be fired from MNF. Not for the comment, but because he sucks at announcing football games.

He should be fired from everything and left to pick up people's laundry.

If Johnny Miller had to prostrate himself before the Gods of PCness, Tony should have to as well, this one was worse.

While I'm not one to get overly sensitive about language, he at least did offer a "100% apology" and not a half-asseed "I'm sorry if anybody was offended" non-apology.

Hope you enjoy sensitivity training, entire Monday Night crew!

Here's what the entire WWL should apologize for: equating Hispanic Heritage Month with Spanish lessons. There's more to heritage than Hank Williams screaming 'andale' and hearing how Raul Allegre does color in Spanish. That was more insulting than anything. Would we celebrate Black History Month by showing clips of "Fat Albert"?

How is that offensive? What does Kornheiser have to apologize for?

I think he sucks as an announcer, but he didn't do anything wrong in this instance.

I agree, Alan. It's a shame that as a society we can't make jokes about ourselves (in Tony's case his inability to understand Spanish) without it being construde as offensive. Too much PC in the world.

With that said, I think ESPN should use this as an excuse to fire Kournheiser from the MNF booth. Not because of the comments, but because he suck so badly.

I would rather listen to Dennis Miller.

Mac G - You said it. I miss Dennis Miller, at least he was funny (at times) and always paid attention to the game even if he didn't have anything to add. Tony K? What a joke.

It's also funny that Korny touts himself as the enlightened voice of honest courage and thoughtfulness about the human condition while bringing in a humorous take about the tragedy of life.

Then he drops a racist joke about Mexicans who do his laundry.

Please let this be a good reason for him to get shitcanned.

I agree this comment was no big deal.

I still plan on making a big deal about it, because I like watching Monday Night Football and Kornheiser is unbearable.

A means to an end! There may be a light at the end of the tunnel!

Never forget Kornheiser's intolerable insult! We shall not let this go unpunished!

It's crazy that this was seen as offensive. He said this after they showed a highlight of a spanish speaking person calling the touchdown. He wasn't suggesting that he (Tony) has mexicans pick up his drycleaning or that mexicans are dry cleaners. It was a bad joke made with no malicious intent.

I have to admit, though, that I cringed after he said it - knowing that someone somewhere would be offended because of the context. It really would have been better to show the touchdown highlight, shut the booth mics off and go to (a non-offensive) commercial.

Anonymous said...
Sep 16, 2008, 10:10:00 AM

The sad joke is that a newspaper man is substantially less interesting and insightful than just about any of the former-player-turned-TV-analysts who are usually in the booth. I thought the sports section still exists so columnists could help readers appreciate the nuances and illuminate the hidden stories in a game? Instead, Kornheiser finds one (or sometimes two) big headline topics and repeats them ad-nauseum throughout the telecast without any concern for the action on the field.

He shouldn't be fired for his lame and possibly offensive comments. He should be fired for making the MNF broadcast pretty much impossible to listen to.

This isn't offensive. It's no Howard Cosell "Look at that little monkey run."

And it didn't bother me. Because I only watch MNF with the sound turned off thanks to Tony Kornholer.

The thing is, Tony is the one who apologized for his comments. No one made a big deal about it that I know of, especially since the game wasn't even over. Don't blame society or a PC world for this one.

I remember him saying that, and immediately realized what he was apologizing for. I don't think it was offensive, at least not as offensive as Roger Clemens comments about Asian dry cleaners.

And ESPN has another useless commentator in the MNF booth. Tony, you are NOT a Cowboys Cheerleader! Quit shoving this so-called biggest team in pro sports down our throats. Fact is, the Cowboys haven't won a playoff game in 12 years. Quit being a Jerry Jones lackey and do your job. Otherwise, just do "PTI". That is a good show, but you're still carried by Michael Wilbon!

Everything that Tony is interested in discussing is complete overkill. (Favre, TO-McNabb, Brady injury) If Tony brings a subject up it generally has already been beaten to death by the talking heads. Instead of enjoying the best game of the year you have to listen to him blather on about garbage you can get from any studio show in America.

Tony hates the MNF gig though makes no bones about the fact he loves the money. So why don't they pony up Russo cash at 3-4 million a year to do the radio show where he is funnier and far more interesting.

Tony has numerous times desccribed on air how apologies for 1) Junior cussing on an NCAA fb game 2) Kelly of golf channel famefor her Tiger foppa so why are people surprised that he PC'ed himself. The only thing missing was Abby Lowell to defend him on air.......classssic!!

And he SHOUTS all the cottonpickin' time! - throughout the entire telecast! Just because he yells his lungs out about NOTHING doesn't make the program exciting. He's there to describe the action - and not be so taken with his own "on-air personna." To me, he's no better than DeSean Jackson spiking a touchdown at the one - pure bonehead!

ESPN needs to release Mr. Kornheiser and replace him with someone who knows a little more about the game. I cant speak for everyone, but I would much rather listen to a football analyst whit a popular name that fans can relate to. Tony should stick to debating with his like-minded butt buddy, Mike Wilbon.

As far as the racial comments that were made, I don't think it was that big of a deal. The ones who should be blamed are ABC/ESPN for treating Hispanic Heritage like it is some kind of joke

I too purchased Field Pass so I don't have to listen to him anymore. It's so obvious Jaws and Tirico are uncomfortable with him, but ESPN does nothing. I watched the Tivoed game Tuesday morning and I guess I must have fast-forwarded that part. With that said, I know as an LDS missionary in El Paso, Texas for several months, I had no choice but to learn the intricacies of Mexican culture and while I'm sure 90 percent of Hispanics don't give a dang about this comment, nothing that can possibly be construed as offensive should be said. Of course, the WWL can easily use this as an excuse to bump Tony off. Jews of all people have no room to say anything remotely inflammatory when so many anti-Semites roam around in our midst.

TAKE NOTE OF THE TENSE HE IS USING AND FROM WHO'S PERSPECTIVE HE IS SAYING IT.

He's joking about a translation of what SOMEONE ELSE would be saying. Which would mean the PERSON SPEAKING SPANISH is asking "Could you pick up my dry cleaning in the morning?" Kornheiser isn't asking the Hispanic to pick up his dry cleaning!!! If anything, the Hispanic is asking Tony to pick up his!

If Kornheiser said the Hispanic said "I'LL PICK UP YOUR DRY CLEANING IN THE MORNING" it would've been a crack on them. But it's not. He just filled in the joke with a random sentence. I can't believe nobody is getting that?? If anything Kornheiser is insulting every culture but Hispanics cause the Hispanic would be asking everyone else to pick up his drycleaning in Tony's translation!!!

Tony K is a terrible on air personality for MNF. He is awful. Former athletes have credibility from being on the field. As do coaches. But this guy is worse than Dennis Miller ever was and could be. Why is he on there other than to be annoying and cause anyone to wish he would realize he sucks and should leave the show for the sake of making it better.

BTW - When Cosell made the comment on the air about "Look at that monkey go" it was a phrase he used many times for white, black, hispanic, or asian. The fact he said it on a national stage about a black athlete was his mistake. But, he was throughout his career his reporting was not biased and many of his closest friends were not Caucasian.

Tony K - please go back to print and leave MNF. For the love of all things, please put down the mic and step away from MNF. You are not very good to say the least.

Which screw-up is he apologizing for? I honestly do not know as I TRY to tune him out, otherwise I am going to throw my laptop through the TV.

That was not offensive, and anyone who thinks so is a whiny bitch. 0% apologies, bitches!

If he wanted to be offensive, he would have made a comment about the guy maing a "run for the border".

I could care less about the laundry remark, but I hate this guys announcing and his VOICE. I now watch Monday Night Football with mute at hand not only for commercials but to SHUT Tony up with.

Why is everyone surprised that Tony "Kornhole" Kornheiser has been "handpicked" for the most coveted announcing spot in all of sports? He was "annointed" by the brass at ESPN...and thier names list like a guest list at a Jewish wedding! Just like at CNN, pretty soon you will not be able to tune in to ESPN at any time of the day and night without seeing some Jew "expert" surrounded by countless other Jewish "experts" pontificating about how their opinion is somehow much more accurate and much more relevant than that of lowly "gentiles" that have no place in a jew dominated mass media. I used to love ESPN until it became another place for jews to congregate..kinda like flies to shit. Despite never taking a fucking snap and never throwing a block in his whole life..TK acts like he has been in the trenches and knows the game inside out. But the jews..LOVE the jews, so don't expect him to go anywhere for awhile..Oh, one more thing..As long as it is a Jew putting down another race..you won't hear a word from the ACLU and countless other jewish human rights groups that usually come out of the wordwork to condemn anyone that is critical of other cultures..they get a free pass....Plus I mean, I'm not the best looking guy..but lets face it..TK is a dead ringer for the "Cryptkeeper"..Get rid of this HEEB already...
