Monday Night Football Week One Live-Blog: Eagles-Cowboys First Half

Monday, September 15, 2008

After a week of hype, McNabb-Owens V is finally upon us! Yeah, you're right....it just doesn't sound that exciting does it? I mean the two of them broke up over three years ago and the media is just trying to find things to keep the angle going at this point. Anyway, it should still be a fun game and with Jessica Simpson in attendance, anything can happen!

We'll get things going tonight around 8 something....see you then.

"You know what? These two teams have to play the best Football that they can tonight and one must come away with the win."- Emmitt Smith

Good to know.

"But as I said, Cowboys-Chargers was OFF THE CHARTS!" - Stuart Scott (Via SS)

Which teams, Stu?

"He was playing with House's money."- Chris Berman

Berman either has a really bad stuttering problem tonight or he's promoting shows on FOX now.

"Roger Staubach threw four touchdown passes on Monday night here against the Baltimore Orioles."- Stuart Scott

Wow. He's just not doing well with the team names tonight. Pretty sure you wanted the Colts with that one Stu.

"Other than maybe the Liberty Bell, no split in Philadelphia has drawn as much attention as Owens and the Eagles."- Chris Berman

Ugh.

"Everyone compares Romo to Brett Favre."- Steve Young

Please don't tell Kornheiser that.

"It's going to bother him more than it's going to hurt him. Then it's going to hurt him."- Emmitt Smith on the protection Barber is wearing to cover up his hurt ribcage.
___________________________

Wow that girl went way overboard with that one and she got booed!!! Wow. Well that's not a good way to start this thing, but here we are. Emmitt tries to explain that the Cowboys need to stop the losing tonight (what losing?) and whatever....my head hurts. The kickoff is coming up soon....

"Sears at Home"? Is that a new feature?

"We're not in Green Bay tonight, so it can't be Favre tonight....Who's your boy tonight Tony?"- Mike Tirico

Jerry Jones? Really??? Whatever. I guess he has less story angles, so that's fine by me. Oh and one more thing....CAN WE START THE G'DAMN GAME ALREADY!?!?! I don't care about Hank's Spanish rendition of "Rowdy Friends".

"Don't take a siesta, Eagles and Boys in a fiesta."- Hank Williams Jr.

Kill me. Although I do enjoy the helmets colliding like that. That's always a winner.

8:41- Eagles ball to start and Nick Folk (Implosion) proceeds to kick it out of bounds. Whoooo! Incomplete to LJ Smith on first down but Westbrook runs for about 14 into 'Boys territory. 1st down.

Those a-holes still don't have the down and distance on the screen! Hahaha. They just made the little marker on the field gigantic!!! People just never cease to amaze me.

Huge hit by Thomas on Westbrook and it's third and long. McNabb spins out and hits his backup TE for a big gain. Whoa! Crazy play....Jackson catches it for a first down but fumbles, a Cowboy picks it up and then he fumbles and the Eagles get it in the endzone.

Nevermind....incomplete. Typed all of that for nothing.....Field Goal try for the Eagles....

Good. 3-0 Philly.

Did he just introduce him as Adam "not Pacman" Jones? Way to fade out the nickname... (Via JFein)

I don't think blogs will let that happen.

8:51- Cowboys first possession and they'll get the ball at the 26 after a holding penalty on the run by Felix Jones.

"More room to operate for T.O. and Romo.....down three-o."- Mike Tirico

So bad. I hate when Tirico tries to be funny.

Ok time to blitz the hell out of Romo so he throws a pick. (Via Lammy742)

Marion Barber for one yard and then Mickell knocks away a pass to Witten. Third down already. No matter....first down on a high pass that Owens climbs the ladder for...first down. Barber loses yards on first down. Romo with a "Brett Favre" like flip on second but Barber goes nowhere. 3rd and long....

Romo to Owens.....GONE! And T.O. even throws in a lunge at the line. 72 yards and that was just beautiful.....7-3 Cowboys.

9:00- Eagles on the move right back at the Cowboys after a few plays to Westbrook and Buckhalter. Westbrook's movement to WR just completely threw the Dallas D for a loop there. 2nd and 2 here and a draw to Westbrook gets the first.

After three straight misses the Eagles are going to have to kick again....

Good. 7-6 Cowboys with 3 minutes left in the first quarter.

"T.O. does it, now McNabb comes out, remember him?" - Tony Kornheiser (Via JFein)

Tony doesn't watch Sports, so Tony wouldn't know who he is.

Bumper music: Countrified version of "When You Wish Upon A Star." Somewhere, Jiminy Cricket is hitting the bottle hard. (Via Jim Williams)

Hahaha. Good catch.

McNabb hasn't thrown up yet. They'll get in the end zone soon. (Via Anon)

Another note on the graphic, is there really any purpose of the ESPN MNF logo being on the bottom? (Via SS)

Good question. The really could get rid of at least half of that. Wait a minute......

Felix Jones takes the kickoff back 98 yards for the Touchdown! Boy that kid is fast.....14-6 Cowboys and the place is going nuts

9:15- Tony and Jaws are fighting over something....

"Punch, counter punch. Right now the Dallas Cowboys are leaning with that hard left and connecting."- Ron Jaworski
"They're hitting knockouts. That's not counter punch. This is big uppercuts knocking somebody down."- Tony Kornheiser

Short gain on first for the Eagles followed by a facemask....no....not called....

"Unless he's the Exorcist's child, he grabbed him."- Tony Kornheiser

Ummm....what?

3rd and 5....McNabb going deep and he's got a man...NO! Mike Jenkins comes flying in and knocks it away. Amazing play and the Eagles have to punt.

And TK becomes the 1 millionth football analyst to tell us the Eagles will be good if McNabb stays healthy. (Via Lammy742)

Romo back to pass.....PICKED OFF! Asanti Samuel grabs and runs around for a bit before being facemasked down. Another no call though. Terrible throw by Romo. Eagles ball at the Dallas 28.

Rex Grossman approves of that throw. (Via PM)

McNabb deep! Flag at the goal line. PI on Henry and the ball will go all the way down to the goal line at the other end because the quarter is over.

14-6 Cowboys after one.

1st down and Goal and the Eagles throw the WR screen to Westbrook....

Touchdown. That was too easy. Just line him up at WR every play. 14-13 'Boys but we've got a good one on our hands.

"Mike Shanahan no where around to go for 2" - Mike Tirico (Via JFein)

9:27- If I were the Eagles, I'd just kick this one out of bounds. Whoa....Isiah Stanback fumbles the kickoff and Dallas will work for

"I took high school Spanish, either he said he's not going to be caught, or please pick up my dry cleaning tomorrow." - Tony Kornheiser (Via SS)

"Tony Curtis? He's been around for awhile."- Tony Kornheiser

Shut up.

HOLY CRAP! Romo has the ball slip through his hands (surprise!) and then fumbles on the way out of the endzone. The Eagles pick it up and that's an Eagles TD!!!

20-14 Eagles and Dallas fans have to be cursing Romo after that one. The blitzes are working like a charm for Philly.

9:32- Wow! Felix Jones almost breaks another kickoff. He's tackled at the Dallas 43. 1st and 10 and Barber goes nowhere and an incomplete pass to Owens on second down. 3rd and long but Romo finds Witten for a first down.

End around to Felix Jones and he gets tackled by his shoestrings or he would still be running. He still gets six. Romo then goes to the slacker Martellus Bennett and he takes it all the way down to the 15.

Barber for very little on first down but follows it up with a big gainer down to the four. 1st and Goal.....

Romo to Owens....Touchdown! This game is just wild. Dallas goes back on top 21-20.

9:44- Eagles ball from their own 28 with 10 minutes left.....and McNabb is sacked on first down by Ratliff. No chance on that one.

"Let's go back to T.O. and Romo for a second...."- Tony Kornheiser

Please no. Westbrook gets a fefw on second down and Jason Avant is crushed by Watkins! Oh wow he caught that?! Amazing. 1st down....McNabb deep!!!!!

DeSean Jackson with the catch! 61 yards!!! Wait...he seriously might have thrown the ball back before crossing the goal line! Oh my god.....challenge by Dallas....

No touchdown! Unbelievable. It's still the Eagles ball at the one, ala the Denver fumble yesterday, but that's just crazy. Doesn't matter though....

Westbrook over the top for a TD! 27-21 Eagles. Insane.

Great call by Tirico to question the crossing of the goal line before anyone else picked up on it. This would be one of the dumbest plays in NFL history if it gets overturned. (Via Captain Redbeard)

Yes it was. He noticed it as it was happening which takes some great eyes. As long as he's not trying to make jokes, he's one of the best.

"That's dicey where that guy's hands were."- Tony Kornheiser on Westbrook getting a massage on the sidelines

9:55- Romo to Owens deep again! Flag....holding brings it back. Man, there's still 7 minutes left in the half. 3rd and long....incomplete. Cowboys to punt to our goat, DeSean Jackson! Who wants to be on a fair catch? Nope....gets it back to the Philly 40. Whew...commercial break. Everyone take a breath. Wait....no commerical. McNabb throws for a first down into Cowboys territory.

"They're number one receiver is playing for the Cowboys tonight."- Tony Kornheiser
"Oh come on!"- Jaws and Tirico simultaneously
"That was three years ago."- Mike Tirico

Get him Mikey! 3rd and 7 for the Eagles....McNabb has about 40 minutes to throw the ball and finds Jackson at the Dallas 25. Great patience there. Timeout.

McNabb and the Eagles get bailed out with a Dallas penalty and they're going four wide here on first down. Draw to Westbrook that's not going anywhere. 2 minute warning....

Donovan McNabb someone escapes a sack and scrambles for a first down. It wasn't pretty like the DMc of old but it got the job done. There's a review for some reason from the booth some reason but that should stand. It does and Westbrook carries it down to the five. McNabb to Lorenzo Booker on second, but he only gets a yard before going out of bounds. 3rd and Goal....McNabb scrambles, hit, hit again, hit again!, and finally down. Eagles will have to kick it....

Good. 30-21 Eagles with :45 left in the half.

NBC just committed suicide by signing up for the Cleveland hype, this should've been the Sunday night game. One of the rare nights that the MNF game is better than the SNF game. (Via SS)

Good call, but NBC's still got the Cowboys three times this season. Cowboys trying to hurry up, but they're wasting time. Romo to Witten right up the middle of the field!!!! How did he get that open? Gain of 42 and into FG range for Nick Folk. Terrible D by Philly on that play....51 Yarder....

Good! 30-24 Eagles. Still :03 left but that should do it for this crazy half. I'll see you in a new thread at the start of the second but be sure to enjoy the National Anthem in the time being.

As I said, a fantastic game, bonehead plays on both sides, but Tony Kornheiser ruined it for me. If this is replayed for generations to come, I hope they just use the radio commentary on Westwood One. He knows nothing about the actual game and is there on his journalistic merits (supposedly).

They tried to make it Howard Cosell but instead it's Dennis Miller II. I have had enough of Kornheiser, it's been shown that Tirico and Jaws work well together as a duo, let them do it and not Kornheiser.

Two more Kornhole comments:

1. Referencing Dallas' roster built to go to the Super Bowl as "Manifest Destiny." I guess he doesn't know American History either.

2. Last play of the game. Turico comments on Philly's failed hook and lateral. Kornhole states "there weren't enough rung on their ladder..." WTF?? I wish I could've seen Jaws and Turico looking at him with the "..you're an idiot.." look. Hey Korny, it's a "hook and lateral" not "hook and ladder". I wonder if he's ever touched a football?
