Hey, A Sports Center Ad Without Steve!

Thursday, July 31, 2008

So apparently Sports Center actually went live today for an hour and I completely missed it. Thanks for the notice! Anyway, I know you're insanely sick of Steve at this point so I thought I'd give you a look at the Hannah Storm-Josh Elliott spot they just came out with. And hey...they mention blogs!

I've said from the very beginning that this plan seemed like a great idea and a move to counter the freshness of blogs, but for them to acknowledge the competition is kind of weird. I mean it's not direct competition but the one thing websites have/had over Sports Center was that in the 24-hour news cycle they had breaking news up during the day. I guess that's not the case anymore. I still don't know how they're going to find new stuff on a slow day over a six hour period, but it's still a good game plan.

FYI- I'm going to have an open thread the day it debuts so be sure to stop by.

Shouldn't Hannah Storm eat something? She looks like the skeleton that hang on the door of my second-grade science class: All jangly arms and such.

Josh Elliott is a sack of shit. He's got the same smug vibe coming off of him as Joe Buck.

I know this is off-topic AA but I don't know if you got a chance to see just how ridiculous ESPNEWS' coverage of the Manny trade was today. Jon Heyman broke the deal around 4:30 in NY (not sure if it was revealed prior to that elsewhere, I'm sure someone knew in Boston) and for at least 20 minutes after that ESPN kept talking to analysts about the big surprise of Manny not being dealt while running Gammons' "close to dead" bull about the trade on the bottom line. Then when they finally realized they said something for 20 seconds (I went back and counted on the DVR) before going right back to the tired Favre story. And then when they finally wheeled out Gammons' corpse later, they made a big deal about how they broke the story and credited Gammons for hearing the Dodgers were a possibility hours before the trade. If he heard about it, one might figure he'd say something about it instead of letting himself look bad with an old report of a dead trade running for 10-15 minutes after the trade was completed, but why bother when he gets the credit anyway.

Obviously, I'm very biased against Gammons but even past him their coverage was a disgrace and I think MLB should be pretty pissed that a network that has a big contract with them spent at least 60% of deadline day recycling the same football stories that people have been tired of for weeks...

In retrospect, how bad of an idea has it turned out to be for Bill Simmons to take his sabbatical from column-writing to finish his book?

Hopefully they'll just set up Dana J and Bayless and Stephen A. in Kramer's apartment and let them keep doing First Take so we don't have to watch.

Don't forget to add the Two Live Stews to that list, mal. And Rob Parker. And Scoop Jackson. And...

Dan Hicks has been nailing that for years! She's a little too over the top dramatic for me! DEFININTELY has a tv consultant or agent in her ear and it shows in bad work.

Why does Sportscenter need to be live all day. Wasn't that the reason they created the channel called ESPNEWS?
