NBC To Hire Dan Patrick And Reunite Him With Olbermann

Monday, July 07, 2008

Wow. How about this little bit of breaking news for a Monday afternoon? NBC is going to bring on Dan Patrick to work with Olbermann during his highlight section during halftimes of the network's Sunday night games....

Dan Patrick, who left ESPN last year to create his own syndicated radio program and write a column for Sports Illustrated, will join NBC Sports where he will be reunited with Keith Olbermann to call the N.F.L. highlights on “Football Night in America.” NBC is scheduled to make the announcement at 2 p.m. Eastern.

NBC is looking to recreate the chemistry and quirky humor that Patrick and Olbermann demonstrated when they were co-anchors on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” which they dubbed “The Big Show.” Olbermann joined “Football Night” last year, but is best known now as the host of MSNBC’s nightly “Countdown” program.
I love the two together as much as the next person but it just makes zero sense to hire more people for that studio show. This hire makes seven employees that currently work on the show and that's just way too many cooks in the kitchen. I wish nothing but fun times for the two, but I don't know how they're going to get to say what they want with Costas, Collinsworth, Bettis, Barber and Peter King vying for airtime as well. It'll be interesting.

Yeah, but what about the burning of fossil fuels to reunite those two blimped-out headed pablum pukers?

Just tunr the lights down a little Costas, but not on the TOYOTA ads, forget that...

More tightlipped snarky crap from Olby and Patrick, that's what football is all about.

In fact, screw the 3rd quarter, why do we need it, no one watches it, they're still stuck in the pisser, just do away with it and give us more Olberman.

I think this is a great hire by NBC,however, I think Football ngiht is becoming like Ssnday Countown with so mcnay analust its too much. I think foroball ngiht should cut down tis cast, and they should start by cutting Jerome Bettis becasue he stinks. And Tiki didn't provide much last year excep rip Eli Manning during the pre-season besides that he provided nothing.

AA - not sure if this deserves it's own post, but i was just hired to be part of the tgifniaonbc (thank god it's football night in america on nbc) crew...apparently they will bring on anybody and everybody.

i'd be happier if KO spent a couple of segments on DPs show. doubt he'd get a full hour since the show is down to 3 hours.

bad move on DPs part: flying out to NY to spend a day on set and only get a few words in edgewise (and have to deal with costas' ego).

-dan

If they can land at least one more massive ego, I might watch this show for the pure train wreck potential.

Patrick's radio show has gotten a lot better over the years. When he was paired with Rob Dibble back in the day it was absolutely God-Awful. KO & DP still play off each other very well, but the NFL on NBC is not the place to reunite them. Who is making these decisions? Just stick to three or four guys and stop trying to jerk with it every year.

What's Irv Cross up to these days?

The show needs less and not more. It started out with a genuine football nuts and bolts show, then quickly jumped the shark with the players room and all the guffaws with Costas and Collinsworth.

AA -- Stop sounding like a 10th grader. What are you saying NBC is re-creating here? Some delusional blast from the past of an ESPN show that did a .8 rating (otherwise known as 8/10ths of 1 percent for all the geniuses who think Patrick and Olbermann re-invented television).
DP is just a snarky, smarmy, effete, self-important drone who brings nothing to the table. Grow up already.

They can get rid of 400 pounds of dead weight by canning Peter King.

Keith Olbermann is great, but I'm not sure if I completely see this panning out. AA is right on the mark on this one, assuming they don't get rid of anyone, there will too many people on that set. For starters, they could get rid of Peter King. His reporting doesn't require an extra person. They could easily just have Costas take that job.

Hopefully Olbermann is as entertaining this year as he was last year.

How many lightbulbs sold does it take for GE to get its money back after first class airfare and hotel in NYC, car service, and salary are accounted for?

Now add his fee/salary.

Oh, don't forget the writedown of goodwill they will forfeit with the NFL.

Honestly, I would not be surprised if we find out later that DP is going replace Olbermann until after the election... NBC News (appears) keen to make KO part of their election team, especially now that Tim Russert's gone (RIP).

Still, the KO-DP Sportscenters were entertaining.

Bettis and Costas can clock out. Madden can keel over and give the job to Collinsworth

Olberman is a guy who was afraid to go to Athens in 04. He's a very weird guy whom I can't stand. Adding Patrick makes this show even worse. This is like the football for Ivy league grads show now. Costas gets sucked into stupid talk with Olberman around. I'm a Giant fan and can tell you Tiki stinks. Luckily I hate pre-games and that is my break time between the 4 pm and night game.
