Minnesota Radio Host In Trouble Over WNBA Comments

Friday, July 18, 2008

It's insanely easy to pick on the WNBA these days. You can talk about the slow play, the low scoring or even the level at which the NBA tries to shove it in our face. But even those angles are a bit played out. Well a radio host at 100.3 FM in Minnesota decided to go with the oh so clever lesbian angle.

Some basketball fans and parents are upset by on-air comments by a local radio host.

Thursday morning, radio show host Chris Baker made a controversial statement about the Women’s National Basketball Association.

The topic of Thursday's show on 100.3 KTLK was about things that never lived up to their hype.

But when one caller suggested the WNBA, some say Baker’s response went too far.

"You know what [the WBNA] is? That's a place for lesbians to make out when they score," Baker said.
Forget for a second that the comment offends both the gay community and women, it seriously amazes me that someone would even think that was funny. I mean he might have got away with that joke in 1996 when the league was formed, but come on. There's nothing worse than a hack DJ trying to pass jokes he heard over 10 years ago.

The crazy thing is that it's not the first time he's gotten in trouble over controversial comments on-air. In April he also urged the beating and shooting of Republican National Convention protesters. Seems like a classy guy.

Everybody knows that when you joke about the WNBA, you crack on "fundamentals".

Agreed the guy is a moron. But what radio host/DJ isn't.

In the wise words of Sgt. Hulka - "Lighten up, Francis."

God, I'm so sick of this P.C. crap. P.C. is ruining this country. P.C. this. P.C. P.C. Sorry, I'm just prepping for the first person to complain about political correctness. That hasn't happened yet, but it's early still. To that type of person, if it doesn't offend you, then it's fine, and everybody else is just a whiner. Or...you're a prick. This sort of "joke" should just stop. People might want to anticipate coming off as assholes and easily hurting people's feelings.

We're giving this guy what he wants...tons of attention to a shitty FM-radio Minneapolis DJ.

He's actually not a DJ. 100.3 is a conservative talk station. He is basically a Rush Limbaugh wannabe. I've listened to him a few times and he makes moronic comments like this all the time.

Lesbians in the WNBA or in women's college basketball? Naw...you NEVER see that. They are all just "friends".

Yeah, OK.

I have a serious crush on Candace Parker. Hope she's straight!

Seriously, the remark was just stupid. And as AA pointed out, about a dozen years out of date.

thermal54,
Last I heard, Candace Parker was dating Shelden Williams. She may have upgraded though after he's been deemed a bust...while she's the most dominant female player on the planet.

AA, you seem a bit hypocritical. You pee yourself everytime Charles Barkley makes a sweeping generalization. But anyone else do it and they've offended Group A and Group B. So somebody is offended by this guy. Who cares? What does this solve? Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have been fixated on issues like this for 20+ years and they've solved what. You want to concentrate on real problems then try to solve them. Thinking this is making any progress is no different than a cop thinking he's making traffic safer by pulling over speeders driving down a bridge.

I have a serious question? How do people determine who(m)? to criticize as far as radio personalities? Tom Bernard on a local station in Minneapolis makes Imus look tame. He is racist every single day, and I just assumed he escaped criticism because he wasn't national. So why start picking on this guy?

Wasn't there an issue with the stadium cameraman showing a shot of two women kissing at a MNBA game a few years back?

What the f was exactly *wrong* with what he said?

Nothing...oooh, lesbians are offended, oooh.

Awwwww...

You have nothing to fear except random comments from people you have no connection to, and fear itself.

But fret not my precious snowflakes. I am almost finished with a device that you will wear in your ear. It will filter out all words that are deemed offensive so you never need worry again.

Your day of enlightened silence will

You are free to go up to an overweight stranger on the street and say, "Wow, you are a fat pig." Why wouldn't you do that? Seriously.

I find that joke offensive... not because of the lesbian angle but for the fact that it's not funny.

Would you go up to a bunch of skinheads and call them racist pieces of garbage?
I've covered both LPGA events and unfortunately a handful of WNBA games. It's no secret there is a large lesbian following at these events.
