The Fanhouse We Knew And Loved, Is Officially Gone

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

I mentioned at the beginning of the month that Fanhouse had decided to use the WNBA as an advertising vehicle, and more recently that they chose to broadcast a curious set of ads for their new Fantasy Football product, but I think this current move is the biggest head-scratcher of them all. I give you the "'House's Fantasy Sports Girls"....

It all makes total sense now. Look, no site on the Internet is without sin when it comes to objectifying women. An attractive woman like Erin Andrews will bring hits to a site, and that's just a known fact. But what we saw above is just wrong on so many levels.

Fanhouse has employed a ton of very talented females involved in editing and content since its inception and this has to be a slap in their collective face. Even more disturbing is that AOL's recent deal with the WNBA included a sponsorship of the league's "Dads and Daughters Program" that will, "celebrate the special connection between dads and daughters by inviting them to experience female athleticism at its best." I'm sure they'd love to come across this trashy video.

The real reason this is such a shame though, is that Fanhouse was one of the sites that brought huge credibility to all Sports Blogs. There's room for all types of websites in the 'Sphere (yes even the dirty and profane), but when a great site with all sorts of talented writers (of both genders and all backgrounds) gives up a respectable model and decides to drop multiple employees and content for something like that....it's just downright depressing. This is a far cry from the engine that Jamie Mottram developed as a positive outlet for Sports fans back in 2006.

I think you'll see more and more of your favorite names disappearing from the site over the weeks to come (which will add to a growing list) as Fanhouse tries to emulate the oh so successful BDSSP model. Good luck with that.

One of the things I respect about your site is that you maintain the line of courtesy and civility. The decision by Fanhouse to tart things up basically ends any chance I have of going to them for sports news. Why is it so hard for sports information providers to provide just sports. I doubt I am alone in thinking that a network with ESPNNEWS reach, and none of the crap, just sports, only, would get the lion's share of viewers. I'd watch it.

I appreciate the sentiment E. I'm by no means perfect, but as much as I enjoy someone who's attractive...I enjoy someone who is intelligent and has something to say. I think that's part of the Erin Andrews appeal but some would likely disagree with that.

Fantasy Sports Girls have been around for a while, but before they were an independent site, which I guess got absorbed by Fanhouse.

http://www.fantasysportsgirl.com/

I'm pretty sure all these girls are just models given a script though, as they often mispronounce names and confuse things.

At least they're putting the "Jim Rome Is Burning" set to good use.

:30 mark: "Looking for some bold predictions? (Throws off black jacket) How about this?"

We're all praying Jemele Hill doesn't do that the next time she's guest host on JRIB.

hey awful announcing, when did you guys get so prude? Remember, you're the one's who put in CAPITAL LETTERS when Erin Andrews is announcing. By showing fantasysportsgirl videos Fanhouse is not only providing some good fantasy content (if you actually listened to the videos you would know that their content is just as good as anything you would hear from any other fantasy "expert"), but why is it such a crime to provide video content that is actually entertaining? They are reaching for a broad male demographic and guess what most guys like...attractive women.

Should be called the Fantasy Butterface League or maybe the Fantasy I See You've Met The Twins League or perhaps the Fantasy Horse Face with Big Fake Tits League.....

who am I kidding, all those yummy tits knocked the creativity out of me. Were they sayin' something about football?

I don't get all the fuss. I can understand if it was just some naked girl dancing with a football in her hands but what they are saying seems like informed opinions.

LOL! Don't take this the wrong way but I would have never seen this except you posted it and I have to say I'm sold. What a great concept - I would much prefer to get my fantasy info from some chick with her boobs bouncing all over than some bald journalist guy.

is this argument still around? there's absolutely nothing wrong with using hot girls to sell stuff. especially this, they're not as stupid as you say they are.

I think most of you missed the point here. I'm not saying this is wrong or a crime against humanity. I'm just saying that losing a great site like Fanhouse is a shame. They've lost multiple writers and more are quitting because of this. I mentioned that I've done my fair share of oogling over the years, but comparing capitalizing Erin Andrews name to this is just ridiculous. If you like stuff like this, then fine...enjoy it. I'm sure it will make good money for AOL until people realize they're bored. It's just said that great writers have to disappear because of it as well.

Oh and one more thing....90% of those girls are plain nasty. Fake tits can only take you so far.

Jul 29, 2008, 7:47:00 PM

Let's see. Complaining about mild anti-gay advertisements. Claiming fake breasts are not the highest achievement of Western civilization.

Sounds like a fairy to me.

AA - I love your site. You do fantastic work, but I think you it's pretty unfair to say that fantasysportsgirl is the end of Fanhouse as a quality site. This is some pretty good fantasy content...It's certainly just as informative and more enjoyable to watch these ladies give me a quick dose of fantasy info as opposed to some fat bald dude infront of a green screen. The folks at fantasysportsgirl do great work and they update their video content multiple times a day which is more than i can say for espn, fox, or cbs.
Look, it's a big tent out there and AOL is an enormouse company that is trying to appeal to a broad audience. They are not a tiny niche site. And the broad audience Fanhouse is clearly trying to reach would be guys who like sports.

Setting aside the other arguments for a moment, I'd like to call B.S. on the claim that all those girls do nothing but analyze fantasy sports for a living. There's no way there are that many girls with fake boobs interested in fantasy analysis as a full-time job.

All this "there goes the neighborhood" talk over fake boos, and fake sports leagues? NEWS FLASH: FANTASY SPORTS ARE FAKE! The players are real, the stats are real, but your's, mine and everyone else's fantasy teams are FAKE! We can all go to espn, yahoo or rotonation to get our "insiders knowledge", but its the same stats you can get on nfl.com. I have all the respect in the world for the Erin Andrews' and Andrea Kramers'of the world, but I like boobs too. I don't want to see AK's. So yeah, there's some butterfaces in that bunch. I just put a piece of paper over the top half of the screen. Try it.

Again....people....you're missing the point. I'm a dude...I like breasts as well. I don't necessarily need them to pay attention ala Billy Madison, but if you do...that's okay.

The point is that Fanhouse is purging itself of amazingly talented females who, whether attractive or not, provide great written content. In turn other male writers are leaving and soon there won't be anyone there. There are billions of sites out there for that junk if you want it....there aren't many like what Fanhouse used to be when it first started.

It's not the end of the world....just a shame that they didn't realize what they had.

~ The Fairy

Jul 29, 2008, 8:53:00 PM

why so hostile? why do you need to resort to name calling by saying that fantasysportsgirl is "junk"? bottom line, this content isn't gonnna take away jobs from any talented writers. do you really believe that content like this is stealing jobs from the amazing female writers out there? if someone is talented, there's a place for them at Fanhouse or any place. at the end of the day, talent wins.

I'm pretty sure the girl in the Shockey jersey is Katie Corzola (sp?) from ESPN's Beg Borrow and Deal. Nice to see she got into "sports broadcasting".

Jul 29, 2008, 9:30:00 PM

Not being hostile at all just a personal opinion. You obviously work for Fanhouse, AOL or the Sports Gals so it shouldn't come as a surprise to you that they cut the Fanhouse Minute which featured four different women and a handful of both females and males have already resigned. Not speculating here....just stating facts. I'm sure talented writers will still be at FH but with this being the general direction the site is taking.....it won't be that way for long.

Good luck with it though.

Jul 29, 2008, 9:46:00 PM

I'm with AA here, I appreciate a fine woman as the next straight guy and everything, but seeing that video is just sort of frustrating that the only reason any of those women are up there are because they look good half-naked rather than having any other sort of qualifications. I don't have anything wrong with the female form, of course, but I don't need to have breasts dangling in front of me to want to watch something, and seeing those jerseys makes me wonder how much we are setting women's sports back from being seen as legitimate sports.

AA has it right. Yeah, boobs and butts sell, and as a woman who enjoys sports, you learn to deal with booby-centric ads. And full disclosure, I enjoy ogling the boys -- I'm a big fan of the Ladies... site. But ogling athletes/announcers/Erin Andrews (not you, Rick Sutcliffe -- that was just wrong), whatever, is not the same as a website undercutting its female writers (who yes, in the sports world, have to deal with a lot of bullshit before they're accepted) by having a bunch of Barbies who don't have a fucking clue deliver content for the site. It's not good.

1. I also was waiting for two 49er chics to go at it...it is san fran isnt it?

2. I wondered what Hazel Mae was doing now that she left NESN.

3. In the first 30 secs or so did the Raider chic mention Randy Moss? Seemed like a very poor edit because it got clipped.

4. You cant equate what Brian does here with EA's name with jiggly fake titties on a bunch of strippers reading cue cards.

5. No that that the blood has returned to all my extremeties I'm gonna watch that again just for the rush.

I'm with you on this all the way, AA. The commenter who accused you of being a "prude" obviously knows nothing about "taste." That promo is about as shallow as any I've ever seen, and you're right; most of those gals just ain't got it in any form or fashion. I guess fake cleavage is just the ultimate end of some guys' attention span, and if I want to see porn, I know where to find that. God job on calling these folks out. And now, back to sports...

I think Jes Golbez, a FH hockey blogger who blogged about this on his own blog over at Hockeyrants, said it best:

"Eye candy is good for a snack, but that's about it. Fans don't go to games to watch cheerleaders, Ice Girls, etc ... If you really want sex, wouldn't you just surf for porn or go to Maxim?"

In other news, FanHouse has just given the Buzz Bissinger's of the journalistic world all the ammo they ever needed to assail the blogosphere.

Thanks AOL.

Fantasy girl is entertainment with a mix of fantasy sports. The information is reliable and it's "visually" appealing to the demographic. Why can't we embrace this new and entertaining spin on fantasy sports info.

"Solid fantasy information being delivered by an attractive girl, makes sense to me."

I saw that they claim to do fantasy analysis for all sports on the site, but I haven't looked deeper: just how solid is it? My impression is that this site is built for casual fantasy players who don't have the attention span to read in-depth analysis and would prefer simple "sit or start" advice via video from a girl with fake boobs.

Though they claim to provide serious, helpful analysis, I don't imagine that analysis will be much help to the serious player. For example, I don't imagine that their baseball coverage delves into K/BB ratio, unsustainably high BABIP, or the usefulness of Jorge Campillo.
