ESPY Nominees Announced

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

I know this seems like a filler post (and it us), but I figured I'd give ESPN a spot here on a slow news day. Here are your ESPY Award finalists for 2008 and there are certainly some interesting categories and nominees to talk about. Most notably and almost sacreligious is the fact that ESPN has nominated Barry Bonds for Best Recording Breaking Performance. I don't know if they have something worked out ahead of time but after the way ESPN covered him the past year I don't know if he's showing up.

Oh and the simple fact that "The Game Plan" is nominated for Best Sports Movie makes me want to throwup. To the categories!

I really wish I was making those last two categories and nominees up, but alas I'm not. There are also the annual awards for Best Player in each Sport, but you can guess who all those involved are with the one exception of Bob Sanders for Best NFL Player.

He's only nominated in the Best Hockey Player category.

I love how Best Male College Athlete has 2 hoops players and a football player. I mean, they coulda mixed it up a little and added a hockey or baseball or lacrosse player

Also, how the hell isnt Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals nominated for Best Game?

Stanford beating USC was a bigger upset that App State over Michigan.

Seriously? Bob Sanders is nominated for best NFL player?

I'm shocked. Honestly. That guy is totally overrated.

Another reason to leave the TV set off.

(Not that I care about the ESPYs, but...)

You're distressed by the fact that "The Game Plan" is nominated for the best sports movie category, but what's more distressing is that those choices were the only things to pick from. Oh, how I long for my youth and the days of "The Sandlot", "The Mighty Ducks", and "Little Big League."

Fresno St. winning the CWS has to be the best upset by default. Da'Tara didn't upset Big Brown. Big Brown lost the race. It was not like those were the only 2 horses in a stretch run and Da'Tara outdueled Big Brown. Also, Appalachian St. beating Michigan was not even the biggest upset of the College Football season like Adam said. Fresno St. was a regional 4 seed, the equivalent to a 13-16 seed in NCAA Basketball winning it all, which has never happened. That has got to be the biggest upset.

If Da'Tara wins, will he walk on stage to accept his award? Live teleconference from his stable? It's ESPN, anything is possible.

If the Giants don't win best team than it is probably the worst award upset since JS Giguere got the award for best NHL player for being good in the in the playoffs up until the Stanley Cup Finals. I won't bother the upset list as I think Frenso State and App State were each more remarkable. Manning to Tyree (Though crazy college football plays usually win the award) and Super XLII will be likely shoo-ins.

Best Male Athlete will probably be Kobe Bryant

Best Female will probably be Danica Patrick even though Candice Parker probably should get it.

Best Moment will be the HS Sportsmanship

NY Giants will probably win best team even though it probably should be The Celtics

Trinity Laterals should be best play.

App. State for biggest upset.

Adrian Peterson for breakthrough athlete

Record Breaking performance will be Brett Favre. Any category Favre is in would be an instant win.

Best Male College Athlete will be Michael Beasley

Female will be Candace Parker

Sports Movie will probably be Resurrecting the Champ. (Just a guess, really didn't see any of these)

Like Nothing Else award: Sid the Kid I hope.

@wfy and ryan

Hockey getting prominence on the WWL yea right. Especially since its ABM (After Barry Melrose).

Unless I'm thinking of something else, wasnt the softball sportsmanship a college game ?
I assume they refer to the play where the opposing players carried the injured player around the bases.

If Patrick gets best female athlete, that would be a joke. Someone above said Parker, and I'd have no problem with her winning, but Lindsey Vonn is the first American woman to win the overall skiing World Cup in 24 years.

So you've got her, a great basketball player, a woman who's ranked number one in golf and has won two majors in the past 12 months....and a race car driver that's won one minor race????

Yeesh.

Best Moment:
H.S. Softball Sportsmanship, Lester's No-Hitter, Danica Patrick's first win

The act of Sportsmanship occurred at a Division II college softball game, not a high school game.

I'm mad at the 'best team' category- in years past they have included each of the four major pro league champions and the champions from the 3 major college sports.... Save this year- they include everyone except the college football champion LSU???? How is that right- especially since they have included the college football champ the past few years???

I'm shocked ESPN does not award an ESPY for Sexiest Sideline Babe. That would be a slam dunk for you-know-who.
