Reporter Calls For Pam Ward To The NFL-N, Calls Out AA

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

A few people in Kansas City emailed me a story from TV Critic Aaron Barnhart and it appears he has either decided to come up with a cruelest of all jokes or he has never watched Sports before. See Mr. Barnhart has a way that NFL Network could make history AND get a great new hire as a replacement for Bryant Gumbel. Hire Pam Ward. Seriously......

After that debacle, the NFL should be looking for an upgrade. Problem is, the league presumably can't go cherry-pick talent from its broadcast partners at NBC, CBS and ESPN. But what if it could have a talented non-NFL announcer from one of those networks, make it broadcasts network-quality ... and score a PR coup in the process?

Gentlemen of the jury, I give you ... Pam Ward.

Not just because she used to toil at a station where I now contribute (WBAL), but because Pam Ward is the best play-by-play talent not calling games for either MLB or the NFL. And because if you're going to make history, you'd better make it with somebody who won't embarrass you, will work hard and keep her head down and make her critics seem like very small-minded (and membered) people.
Wow....just wow. Normally I stay away from opinion based pieces like these but this is the dumbest idea I've heard in....well ever. This is dumber than Duel, Who's Now, and Chris Berman at the Masters combined. Since I'm responsible for the Deadspin link that he added above let me explain something to you Mr. Barnhart. It's very simple in fact....

People who don't know the rules of Football shouldn't be calling games (which is clearly evident in that clip and throughout her calls last season).

See it's not that Pam Ward isn't good at calling certain games (WNBA), it's that she's always terrible calling Football games. She gets names wrong, plays wrong, and comes across as never having seen a Football game. Sort of like Mr. Barnhart.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and likes who they like, but Pam Ward can't call College games right and you want her on Pro ones? Okaaaaay. Joe Buck and Joe Morgan always come up on this site as individuals people can't stand, but there's always one or two that comes to their defense. Out of the tens of thousands of comments and emails I've received not one person has ever defended Pam Ward as a College Football announcer. Oh and you can add to that the million plus people who voted her into the Semifinals of the AOL Worst Announcer Tournament.

Also, making an uninformed statements like....
Scanning the blogs brought me no relief, either, as I uncovered only cheerfully sexist sites, like the one that claimed to chronicle the foibles of announcer regardless of gender, so what if all the names in big type were women's?
...Just makes you look uninformed and dumb. This site's editor is so sexist that he said on the radio in Houston last week that Erin Andrews and Stacey Dales should get a chance as analysts in the booth. Not just because they are attractive but because they care about the Sports they cover and are extremely intelligent. Which is more than I could say for some of the current ESPN announcers.

I'm not going to start a "Blogging War" with a random TV reporter, but if you want to tell him why he's wrong in the comments....I'm sure he's reading.

Update: Thanks to App Fan for reminding me of this video as well.....

If it pleases the AA court, I would like to present exhibit No. 1,976 as to why Ward to the NFL Network would be a bad idea*.

And if you laugh at that, well, you're just "sexist."

* Though, when you think about it, it would get rid of her on college football broadcasts

I thought it was Tax day and not April 1st? Pam Ward absolutely blows.

Barnhart is a hack AA. Don't let his nonsense get to you. Pam Ward as the lead play-by-play on the NFL Network would be the worst move in the history of Sports Media.

I'm a big fan of Barnhart, as he has one of the best sites for aggregated TV news and views. But I was dumbfounded by that post. I suppose the argument could be made that she would have to be better with better analysts alongside her, but years of experience on the 11 a.m. Big Ten games tell me she'd be Gumbel-esque in prime time. Rick Romo, we hardly knew ya ...

Barnhart is already clueless....Ward isn't a woman.

I've got a better idea:

Have Billy Packer study football.

From the reax "Pam Ward is by far the best caller in college football":

She calls the game in a detailed manner, but lets the color guy shine and give their input. She doesn't try to overshadow the game, yet definitely becomes an intergral part of it. Since she mainly does Big Ten games (including my Iowa Hawkeyes), I consider her the official voice of the Big Ten.

Pardon? Well, at least Barnhart backs his assertions up with two letters, including someone who worked with her in DC, and that guy whose letter I quoted wasn't it, so she has one more fan of her work, which brings it up to...five?

AA, I notice that you didn't defend yourself on the small minded and small membered claim.

Barnhart knows your penis.

You're right AA, Pam Ward is terrible.

I don't see the big deal here; it's not like anyone's gonna see her. There's only about 15 people in the whole country that get the NFL-N on their cable system.

sports media is increasingly about opinion today...which i like...being a blogger as well.

But, nonetheless, opinion usually needs to be supported by some semblance of fact - even if the facts are being somehow twisted to make arguments work.

I've been embarrassed by posts i've put up before on a crappy little blog b/c they weren't adequately researched and made me look uninformed/stupid/lazy.

How does someone who is a "real" journalist write something like that and be able to say they take their jobs seriously?

what a j-o-k-e.

How about we leave Pam to call the 3rd or 4th best Big Ten game, so we know where she is and can't cause too much trouble, mmm kay?

Pam Ward a good idea? I'm not a masochist so no thanks.

By the way AA keep up the sexist site you have going. You really are a mysogynistic bastard.

I loved how he highlighted Erin Andrews and Dana Jacobson as if that was credible enough to look like he was digging up evidence that this site is sexist. Let us think for a moment. Erin Andrews, when is she not going to be in big font anywhere on a sports related blog?

And Dana Jacobson, I wonder why she would be up there.

Regardless, this is nothing I would lose any sleep over.

If Paw Ward really was a candidate, is it too late to see if Bryant would reconsider?

I don't care if you hire a woman. Just hire one who knows the difference between a kick and a punt.

Does this guy watch her games? Just give it to Tom Hammond and call it a day.

Honestly, has he EVER listened to her call a game? I think there is like a -425% chance it happens, but just the thought is horrible enough. Then again, I don't get the channel.

In order to be "The Voice of the Big Ten" you have to call games above the level of Iowa/Michigan State & the papajohns.com Bowl.

I think he did this to stir shit up. Mission accomplished. Pam Ward can call hoops games, but is absolutely deficient on football play-by-play.

And as far as the image Barnhart picked from the site: how dumb do you have to be to think that the label cloud is proof someone is sexist?
