Gary Thorne Is Completely Clueless

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

So reader RB sent me an email telling me that I just HAD to find Gary Thorne and Steve Phillip's conversation about the Canseco book this morning. I searched Red Lasso and finally found it in the Top of the Third Inning and I don't think I've ever been this blown away by an Announcer's idiocy before (maybe Suzyn Waldman).

The talk starts with Gary Thorne mentioning "Jason Giambi's second book", and Steve Phillips corrects him right away. But does that stop Thorne? Of course not....

Okay, let's recap. First, Gay Thorne thinks Giambi wrote the book. Second (after being corrected), jokes about the throw from first to third. And finally, right when you think it's over he says that the two need to have a clubhouse meeting??? Canseco does not play baseball anymore and if memory serves I don't think he ever played First Base.

How clueless can you be? I mean jetlag is a bitch, but that was ridiculous.

I'm sure Gary has already spoken with Giambi. He was wonderful.

Thorne has no idea what is going on. He was also the guy who came out and said that Schilling's bloody sock was just red paint. Maybe he's turning into a bumbling idiot like Mike Patrick

Doug Mirabelli agrees.

Can we leave Steve Phillips in Japan and bring back Bobby V?

This morning Thorne commented about Sean Casey's power hitting

Thorne normally does a good job..probably a combination of the time change and having to do the game with an idiot like Phillips. I mean it just has to rub off on ya.

Did he say anything about US Americans needing maps such as The Iraq and such as South Africa and such as?

Judging by the replay of today's game, I am starting to get the feeling ESPN regrets not having Orestes Destrade there to do color commentary. He told some good stories about playing in the Japanese league. There are only so many times Steve Phillips can say, "When I was the GM for the Mets...".

I am so happy someone else caught that! I was watching at work this morning and couldn't believe what I was hearing... I thought I was the one that needed to get more sleep. Wow... do you think he knows now? Doubtful.

It's so painfully obvious that ESPN doesn't give two cents about baseball. When they have baseball coverage, when they can afford to squeeze it between mock NFL drafts, they put on the worst announcers in the game. Thorne (could it be anymore obvious that he hates the Sox?) and Phillips (How the heck did this guy become a GM?) have now taken their ineptitude worldwide, Joe Morgan was an outstanding player put a lousy announcer, and John Kruk is well.... what the hell is John Kruk doing on national TV?!?!? The only two worth anything are Peter Gammons and Jon Miller.

All this being said, again, it's all to clear that ESPN shows baseball because it has to.... and gives the bare minimum effort when it comes to putting forward quality coverage.

yet another reason that Thorne needs to get back to calling NHL games.

A complete moron. Besides this little blip in the 3rd inning, how many times did Thorne and Phillips get he names of the A's players wrong. "Dale Barton", "Jack Hammerhan" and oh by the way Kurt Suzuki is now from Japan not Hawaii although he was born and raised in Hawaii. Get your stuff straight ESPN, your baseball department sucks.

Boo hoo people. He made a couple of mistakes. Big deal. We all knew EXACLY what he was implying with the Giambi and the 1st to 3rd comments. Sure, the third was ridiculous, but give the guy a break.

Listen people, if you think this clip is "bad" announcing, then you all are either ignorant morons or don't listen to announcing at all. I've heard far worse from the likes of guys like Cick Vitale, Bill Raftery and just about every ESPN SportsCenter anchor. I've listened to this twice and didn't hear anything that remotely suggested Canseco is on the Yankees. Guys can have "clubhouse talks" with anyone at anytime at any place. It's a phrase, like calling a basketball an "orange" or an assist a "dime". If you are going to take pot-shots at Gary Thorne, at least be accurate. If you think this clip is an example of bad announcing, then you are just an ASSCLOWN. Talk about bad, trying listening to a game called by Jim Nantz or Kevin Harlan. And while Al Michaels was once servicable, he too had turned into someone in love with his own voice. Joe Buck has always been a joke, as is Chip Caray.

I did listen again you moron. I listened TWICE. Nothing. If anyone thinks it's said, they need to clean their ears and wash their putrid brains.

How's Schilling, Gary?

He didn't so much suggest that Canseco's on the Yankees as he suggested that GIAMBI WROTE THE BOOK. Moron. Hence the "throws from third to first." See, A-Rod plays third for the Yankees. Giambi sometimes plays first. That would mean Thorne thinks those connections might somehow be awkward.

When, in fact, Giambi DIDN'T write the book, but Thorne (or you, or your husband, whichever) continued to act as if he did.

It's quite clear that Thorne, who's an announcer I like, couldn't get it out of his head that Giambi was the book writer and accuser of Arod hitting on his wife. He even mentions the two having to sit down in the clubhouse and sort it out.

Stop bitching. You try doing all of ABCs NHL playoff coverage, then going to ESPN for anything, then MLB games, and still get your stuff straight.
