UNC Fans Think One Regular Season Loss Eliminates Them From Competition

Saturday, January 19, 2008

I'm not going to poke fun at people crying....wait, yes I am. Seriously UNC....you're 18 and 1, why the hell are you all bawling after one loss?

Come on. It's not even February yet and you're crying? There's no crying in Basketball!

Update: Ooh....Mr. I has pictures, and they're umm....special.....

Helluva game. It's going to be a fun night in College Park.

I got a call about a celebration party during Gary's postgame interview...

I appreciate ESPN showing footage during the Duke-Clemson game of the fans watching the UNC-UMd game on the TV monitors, and then the Clemson and Duke fans high-fiving each other over Carolina losing.

When you're as good as Carolina you expect to win every game, so, yes, a loss can reduce Tar Heel fans to tears.

Of course, the rest of the ACC wouldn't understand that considering most of them are define their seasons by beating Carolina. Carolina defines its season by winning a national title.

LOL, AA, I thought the exact same thing. I can understand that in college football because one loss could eliminate you from title contention, but come on, Tar Heel fans.

For God's sake, you'll be a #1 seed and find a way to make the Final Four. Get over it.

Carolina fans are in the same class(or classlessness) as Philadelphia fans, most SEC fans, and Bill O'Reilly. None of them think their shit stinks.
And Anonymous #1- even though I'm a Virginia fan, I'm not the tool you make other ACC fans out to be. I'm actually quite aware of what "makes a season."

Bruce,

With due respect, but you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Judging from the reaction of BOTH sides you would have thought it was the Final Four, not a conference game in January...

You have to be kidding me Heels fans. Yeah it was a tough loss at home, but it means absolutely nothing to you. Zero, zilch, nada....You'll still be a one seed.

Jan 19, 2008, 10:57:00 PM

I agree with Anon @ 10:38 that Maryland's reaction was somewhat over the top, but when you're 18 1/2 point underdogs (ridiculous line) then you can celebrate however you want.

AA,

It means something but only in regards to the deficiencies it showed. The loss itself, assuming it is one of only a few will not mean much in March.

As for other teams celebrating. It happens. UNC has a long history of success and winning in Chapel Hill, with the Heels ranked #1 is a tall order so pulling it off is cause for a little celebration especially for a team that has struggled the way MD has.

Honestly anytime you cry after a loss like that, you need to check your fandom.

if UNC defines it's season with a title why are their fans crying after one loss in the REGULAR season?

Better or worse then Dook kid crying in '04 ACC Championship game?

Worse... I said it before on here a coule days ago, the Duke kid crying is an amazing picture that I love looking at. I think I'm going to hell for that, but oh well.

And to Tar Heel fan about the celebration... I agree completely, I'm a Maryland student, so I loved it. But I tried to be objective (unlike the announcers of the game) so that's what I came up with.

I both love and hate the personality of our team, we're almost too confident. But I love that and the fire Vazquez (Greivy as I call him) brings to the game, and he's the cockiest S.O.B. I've ever met.

Hey, let's sum up our entire fan-base by showing the reactions of two girls in the stands! That sounds fair and reasonable.

(My take? The loss sucks, but we'll get over it. This isn't exactly LSU over Florida from last year, but both teams needed a wake-up call and have gotten it.)

If you're #1 in the country and you lose...at home...to a struggling conference opponent with a reputation of having the most villainous fanbase in the conference...you wouldn't be very happy either.

Yet I, and most of the people I talked to, were emotionally past the loss within 10 minutes after the game ended.

Oh, and I despise Greivis Vasquez now.

haha keep crying, cunt

Jan 20, 2008, 11:28:00 AM

the celebration isn't about beating UNC, it's about beating the no 1 team in the country on the road. it's about getting a win that COULD offset the terrible losses earlier in the year (assuming they keep playing well) and give us a shot at the tourney despite being seemingly dead a month ago. this is why i hate UNC as much as duke. the fans are equally arrogant, elitist, and borderline racist. the entire state of north carolina can suck my balls.

wow, two chicks crying in the stands represent the ENTIRE UNC fanbase....Awful Blogging.

It was good that they lost, they had been barely winning games anyway.

The Carolina fans on this board seem quite bitter. Think of it this way, MD doesn't care that we beat UNC. We care much more about beating Duke and VA than we ever will about UNC. We do care that we beat a #1 ranked team and handed them their first loss of the year. If it had been Hofstra that was unbeated and ranked #1, we would have been just as excited over that victory.

Funny thing - if this had been a football game and unranked MD had beaten #1 UNC (though UNC will never be #1 in football), UNC would be joining Rutgers & BC in the graveyard. I think the BBall team needs a new tradition.........

Yes, the comments are sad as it reflects on the community where I live, Chapel Hill, NC. I know many UNC fans (similar to the female that made the comment) and hence why, even as a Christian, I am overwhelmingly challenged to love my UNC-Chapel Hill neighbors, despite how difficult some of them can be). I won't go into name calling so I can hide the guilty parties. I would never call anyone out.

But I'm a Maryland fan and even though it hurts, I'll get over it and forgive her. I always do. Yes, I live in Chapel Hill, NC but I'm a
Maryland fan (I grew up in Maryland and even worked at University of Maryland @ College Park before moving here 14-15 years ago). I even worked for UNC-Chapel Hill for almost 8 years so I know alot about how UNC-Chapel Hill people are like but that doesn't mean that they are all like that. I know lots of UNC-Chapel Hill students and staff (and the general public) that are super nice (as with any college town).

But, like I've always said since I live here, the fans are spoiled here......and there are times like this one where "a bad color" comes out. I
have even attended UNC-Maryland games in the past here in Chapel Hill and after Maryland wins, I'm a bit scared. I've even been heckled while leaving games.

But really, UNC should have lost to Georgia Tech and Clemson earlier in the season and Maryland would have been their 3rd ACC loss, not their first. So if UNC had lost earlier, maybe the comments wouldn't have happened.

Now, I know I've heard many Terp fans say bad things about the Tarheels in the past, mostly because of jealousy as UNC-Chapel Hill
has won many ACC and NCAA Championships and Terp fans want respect (somehow respect causes so many problems in our society - hence gangs). Terp fans feel that Dicky V loves UNC and Duke more than the
Terps and that doesn't sit well with them.

Anyway, I digress. Back to the UNC gal. So let's all forgive the female who made these comments and become more understanding of each
other. I will. Know what? I've now forgiven her.

Chapel Hill Terp (formerly Durham Terp)

Being a student at Maryland and a huge terps fan, i'm ecstatic that we were able to knock off the number 1 team in the country, especially since it was a huge ACC win. However, i think all of this talk about how UNC fans are racist because someone yelled "go back to the ghetto" is pretty ridiculous. First off, "Go back to the ghetto" doesn't explicitly convey any sort of racial message. Secondly, being a current student at UMD, i'll be the first person to say that College Park IS ghetto. Route 1 outside of the 3 lights between paint branch and hartwick roads are horrible. I think every other maryland student can agree with me here...

I am also a Maryland student and I particially agree with the statement above me. It is located in PG County, not known for its low crime rates. However, the campus itself is very nice, and not only is it a very competitive academic school, it's not cheap. So ghetto, not really. Coming from Gaithersburg, where gang killings in public are slowly becoming a depressing norm, I must say UMD is not ghetto at all.

O yeah and I am so glad that we pwned UNC, not only a rival team, but a very good team. Hopefully we can do the same with Duke Sunday.

In response to the MD fan who said MD didn't care that much about beating UNC: Of course not, UNC leads MD in the all-time head-to-head series by 100 games--there is never really any redemption from that. Like he said, it's better for MD to focus on teams like UVa and Duke that are more on MD's level.
