Keith Olbermann's Week #1 WPOTW.....Keith Olbermann!

Thursday, September 06, 2007

God. I don't even know where to start. We had about a minute and a half of highlights of the actual game followed by Keith Olbermann ragging on himself and introducing some random bat phone. Can we say failure now, or should I give it a couple of weeks???

The ONLY redeeming quality about this whole thing is Chris Collinsworth just absolutely clowning everyone on the set each week. Someone needs to get him his own show. Perhaps a political commentary show? I know someone who needs to be put out to pasture.

Update: Just to clarify....I'm not looking for a day's worth of highlights like some of you have hinted at. I'm looking for a breakdown of the first half....that's it. If Keith is going to do this promo for his show every week, then there's no room for any analysis regarding the game at hand.

Someone in the comments mentioned that "haven't most football fans seen all of the day's highlights by the time halftime on Sunday night comes around". Great point.....hasn't everyone in the g'damn world seen the back story on anyone he could bring up as the "worst person in the world"!?!

It's all old news, and it's pointless. You can see why Chris Collinsworth is already annoyed with the whole thing. Why? Because he knows something about Football AND the game that was taking place on the station we were all watching.

More on this tomorrow....

You must be one of those guys who just hate everything no matter how it is done. Maybe I just like NBC because I am so sick of the evil emipire who yells and screams at you that is ESPN. I am done with the dumb jock aspect that is FOX. I am only 25 so I am no where near old enough for CBS programming and how they go about things. I like the ideas they have and it should be pretty cool come Sunday cause they have first rights to ALL the highlights of the day.

Hey Anon,

Every opinion is welcome, but how in the hell are they going to get to "ALL the highlights of the day" if they waste 4 minutes on this random commentary?

Just a question. At least ESPN showed hightlights...allbeit with Chris Berman and TJ, but highlights just the same.

Sep 6, 2007, 11:24:00 PM

Have you noticed that anytime there is Olbermann criticism here, someone is writing these page-long retorts? He's the only person ever mentioned who someone feels the need to write down so much to defend...it's weird.

Does Keith have someone on his payroll scanning the blogs? :)

Wake up, Anon! Olbermann's segment isn't working...you deserve better on your halftime show!

Hey, I fell asleep, what a boring game.

Keith is ADMITTING he is a shitty writer.

Was he reading this site when his stupid commentary was pulled apart piece by piece?

Where are his imbecile defenders? He admitted he wrote that garbage that read like the illegible scratchings of some pot addled liberal arts school English major.

LOL, Christ he loves himself. He still makes no sense. Uncomfortable. The NFL content of that was nil. Why was that put on the air? Is NBC run by chimps?

Yes, I can see throwing a brick at a tv when this douchebag is on.

As Peter King might say: Tiki, you're a jock, you always were a jock, you're still a jock. People liked you because you were a jock, not because you're smart. You're objectively stupid, go back to running into things.

I'm actually pining for the Harlan/Gannon team calling the Stillers game.

I think they'll at least talk about football.

Anon is Keith doing some Keith Olbermannian sock-puppeting.

Isn't that right Keith?

AA, Olbermann was reading your site and based his little Olbermann playtime theater this week on what he read at your site.

Hey AA,

Look with all due respect, can't you see that was a one time thing? Why insult all of us with an "in-depth" breakdown of a 10-10 first half of football that we just saw? Does that keep anyone watching? Look at what we are doing...there are so many options to see a highlight of a few plays. Look how fast you put up the Keith Olbermann bit. I don't think it is important anymore to cut to highlights of one half of football for 15 mins. They did not do that on ABC MNF either.

Also, the whole point of bringing on Keith wasn't for anything political as people seem to refuse to believe. Before ESPN became a crapfest and they were actually good, Keith (and Dan Patrick) was the man on highlights. KO is going to do the same thing on NBC and be in charge of all highlights on FNIA for each Sunday's games. I think that is going to be cool.

Anon #2- It's always the case when any sort of "political" commentary comes up. Left wingers (and I am one) feel the need to stick up for their own because it's all they have. I have nothing against them but I think it's hilarious when it carries over into Sports. Something they know nothing about.

HW- I wish that was the case, but I guess we'll never know.

Sep 6, 2007, 11:44:00 PM

Damn the Saints stink this year! Maybe if he said that everyone would be happy!

Oh god....I didn't think this was going to start at midnight, but okay....I'll bite Anon #3....

Look, it's Sports. If you think they didn't bring on Keith to gain the political fans then you are kidding yourself. I have nothing against him as a newscaster but he's out of touch with Sports.

Of course I'm going to put the, as you so eloquently put it "bit", up as quickly as possible because everyone wants to see it.

I love opinions on this site because that's what the whole thing is for. But you have to understand things from the aspect of a sportsfan which you obviously are not.

1 minute of highlights and 5 minutes of dribble will always get bashed here, and on any other site.

Sep 6, 2007, 11:55:00 PM

Well flip over to Chris Berman, he seems to speak on your level.

AA, I enjoy your site and am a first-time commenter. But I think part of your response to Anon's first comment doesn't make any sense or is, at least, missing the point. Don't they show all the highlights of the day during their hour-long pre-game show, not during halftime when the Worst Person in Football segment will run? Besides, haven't most football fans seen all of the day's highlights by the time halftime on Sunday night comes around? And does anyone need to hear another retired player say that the losing team needs to get its passing/running game going in the second half?

Well flip over to Chris Berman, he seems to speak on your level.

What is it with Olberdouche fans?

They always seem to think they're just smarter than everybody else.

What kind of an asshole has that as their first response to criticism of Olberman.

"You guys can't like Olbermann, he's ABOVE you. You're not smart enough to understand, we have our own language that we know and that YOU can't understand."

Like little 13 year old girls with a little secret society.

Shouldn't you be setting up an afternoon tea for your dolls?

AA: I wouldn't be surprised at all that Olbermann is obsessed with everything Keith. He strikes me as the type, vain and douchey.

I wonder if Keith ever cleans his ass with toilet paper seeing his head is always up there anyway.

Sep 7, 2007, 12:44:00 AM

Okay, DR and Anon.....

I'M NOT LOOKING FOR THE DAYS HIGHLIGHTS I'M LOOKING FOR THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE F'ING GAME BEING PLAYED!!!!!!!!!

Jesus H. Christ. How is that lost on you all? I don't want it to be a Chris Berman recap of the days highlights. I want someone to show me why the score was 10-10 at the half, and I think any sports fan wants to see the same.

I have nothing against any of you, but you are so off-base it's beyond me. If you think that this whole thing isn't an advertisement for K.O's show then you are all blind. He's getting slayed by O'Reilly (like it or not) and this is the result.

It's not funny and the "Sports" program that's being aired suffers. Why the hell do you think Chris Collinsworth says something everytime?

All I want is some witty banter, a few highlights, a reason why the first half was so low scoring, and let's move on.

Sep 7, 2007, 12:53:00 AM

P.S.- I still love all of you BTW and I love the banter.....just please, someone come with something better please. If you don't get what I'm saying just ask.

Sep 7, 2007, 12:55:00 AM

OK here's my effort...

Olbermann looked nervous and certainly not confident in the material. I kept saying before the segment "please not about Vick...". But it was, even if indirectly. Perhaps he knew going into the segment it was a lame cross-promotional bit.

The segment was bad and its only redeeming quality was that it was awkward television, which is always fun to watch.

And let's face it--what exactly is he going to say that the NFL will allow anyway? Nada.

To counter balance the superfluous segment that adds nothing to whatever happened in the first half, I propose Collinsworth get his own 8 minute highlight-free segment called 'Chris Thinks You're Stupid.'

Basically someone says something that isn't relevant to the program/game at hand . . .

Keith: There is no reason why my program shouldn't be a number 1 hit. I have talking puppets and a paper toss thing at the end that is HILARIOUS.

[Everyone looks at each other as Collinsworth stands up]

Chris: You're killing me, Big Head. You're Stupid. Shut Up.

I'm talking to Ebersol about how we can incorporate Bettis into the segment with his "ughhhh . . . that's right" commentary that really electrifies the atmosphere on the set.

Sep 7, 2007, 1:48:00 AM

You know who looked less thrilled with Keith than Collinsworth?

Tiki. That man could not have more uncomfortable.

I am still finding it hard to find a frickin reason why Olby is doing these skits on an NFL show.

What would work for them is to set him up, and they may be doing this, as someone Joe Sixpack will actually HATE seeing whenever he's on the show, sort of like Cosell. They're doing a good job so far and this could actually be the replacement for Howie that Miller et al could never get close to being.

If I were the producer, it's what I would do.

You hit it on the head AA. Keith's show is the most watched show on MSNBC and still gets killed by CNN and FOX shows. Personally I would have liked to have seen some sort of Oddball segment. His show is more laid back than the others and I think they need to highlight that aspect of the program if they are going to get the football demo. Get work with the game and dealing with clowns @ 1 am.

I actually give Keith props for calling himself out - that takes a certain amount of guts, though it was also a way to apologize for bad commentary without actually apologizing.

That said, I don't think it needed to be on my TV. Then again, since the invention of TIVO, I haven't watched a halftime show for any reason. So maybe I'm not in the demographic here.

Also, for anyone who feels the need to skewer a TV personality for being self-satisfied and attention-seeking... well, HELLOOOO, they're on television. Even those who seem humble are full of themselves. Let's accept that and move on to kicking them in the nuts for performing their jobs in a technically inferior manner.

for the last friggin' time people:

his segment isn't working on a halftime show. it's that simple.

doesn't make him a failure or a bad person or whatever the problem is here with everyone...his show is fine on HIS show, just not during halftime of an NFL game, that's all.

I think they're going to be a pretty decent in-studio group actually. Always liked Collinsworth, and Olbermann is a pretty funny guy when he's not trying too hard. Tiki's a smart dude and so is Costas, seems like a good mix.

AA, you are right that KO's act doesn't work -- or at least didn't work last night. It was complete self-promotion (okay, not a surprise, but still) Worst person? Oh, how cute, it's ME!! Wow, I'm so surprised. And why is it me? Because it's my segment! Too too much.
I used to love Olberman, watched the MSNBC show a lot, and then he just got mean and hateful and kept taking on O'Reilly. Hey, Keith, if I wanted to watch O'R, I would. Do your own show. Too much "All about me" which is what this Football Night In America bit is also looking like.

This segment was so bad, I couldn't believe it.

Next time, he should call Tiki Barber the worst person in the NFL, then Tiki should beat his ass and we can call it done.

Olberman's clearly an idiot if he honestly thinks that this crap is going to bolster his ratings. It's in all actuality make NFL fans demand their friends and family turn his crappy show off.

I couldn't stand Olbermann on SportsCenter. Years away from sports haven't done him any favors. And they've already got too many people on-set now as it is. And it's clear that at least Tiki and CC can't stand him. Costas is too much of a pro to let it show if he does but I can't imagine he likes the Big Giant Ego on his show either. NBC made a huge mistake putting Olbermann on this show along with the other 99 guys already there.
