NBC Fires Bud Collins

Monday, July 02, 2007

78-Year Old Tennis Analyst Bud Collins has been let go in what is said to be a cost cutting measure. NBC insists it wasn't based on Collins' age, but you do have to wonder.

I haven't really watched Tennis in years but when I was younger Collins' energy would keep me on the channel for at least a few points.

P.S.- Anyone who wears pants like that (above) is okay in my book.

Bud Collins rules. This move does not.

If NBC Sports hadn't spent millions on the Olympics, perhaps it could afford to keep on staff intelligent and knowledgeable personalities like Collins. Who's next? Bob Costas? Come on, NBC.

I've had it with NBC-first Imus, now Bud Collins. God forbid they should have anyone left with a personality. Firing Bud Collins was both cruel and idiotic. The man IS tennis. I'm writing the other networks to encourage them to bring Bud online. And hope you will do the same. Boo on you, NBC.

Well, I'm sorry to be saying this, but I do think it was time for him to move on. In all honesty, his horrible mangling of foreign languages during interviews and other faux pas made me cringe every time he came on camera. It was a great run and he certainly created and framed lots of great memories, but it is time for a change. I wish him all the best of luck and hope he continues at the Globe for many years to come!
