Live Blog- George Mason/VCU- Second Half

Monday, March 05, 2007

And We're Baaaaack! 31-27.....score hasn't changed at the half.

VCU gets an early alley-oop and Mason calls an early timeout to settle down.

Maynor needs to drive more in this game. He gets to the line now, but misses the first. He hits the second and it's a one point game. Monroe with a basket and Smith with a steal and a hope.....lead back to five for Mason.

GMU is going inside to Thomas and Monroe, and Anderson picks up his 4th for VCU. Smith with a hell of a hustle play and score.

37-30 Patriots

"Cinderella's got a lot of things working for her in this game"- JD, ENOUGH!!!!!!

My boy Monroe picks up his 3rd and takes a seat. VCU needs to take this inside. Right on queue the Rams take back to back possessions into the paint, and get to the line. 1 out of 2 and the lead is back down to four.

Press back on for VCU.....it's not doing much for them, so I don't understand why they're keeping it on. Crowd is back into it as a goal-tending call makes it a two point game. Mason is scoreless in the last 4 minutes and reeling a bit. Offensive board and put back ties it up.

37-37 at the under twelve.....the VCU fans are finally realizing they are attending a basketball game.

Smith again! 14 points on the night. Damn! A nice put back dunk for VCU. Pellot-Rosa steals the ball and is fouled. He also hit a half-court shot, but no and one....everyone chuckles. Mason does not need him to heat up. 41-40 Rams.....10 mins left for Cinderella.....dammit now I'm doing it.

Norwood with a three and Mason back up two. Great back door to Norwood for the Jam, and NOW we're playing CAA basketball!

Norwood with a steal, and Mason is feeling it. Norwood finally misses and VCU grabs the board. Yet another offensive rebound for VCU and they get an easy two.

Under 8 minutes left. 45-43 Mason.

Extrapolater says......I wonder if I can quickly write a "Who The Hell Are... GMU?" and jinx them before the game's over.

There will be none of that! Northern Virginia NEEDS another GMU run!!!

7:24 Left- Mason still in the zone, and Maynor forces a bad shot....rebound Mason. "Slow the carriage down if you're George Mason"- JD, I give up....you're hopeless. Both teams trade baskets....the lead is still two. Vaughn misses on the drive for GMU, and VCU follows with a Maynor layup. Tie game.

A steal and a bucket for VCU and they go up two. Timeout Mason, and Carter comes up limping. Actually it was a lucky timeout becuase VCU's press had Carter locked up. It looks like he just buckled his ankle/knee, and Mason's leading scorer might be out for the rest of the game.

Norwood hits yet another three, and Mason has the lead back at one. Thomas follows with a layup and the lead is three.

Under 4 with the score 52-49......VCU shooting two after the commercial break.

1 out of 2 from the line.....2 point game. Close range jumper missed, and it's VCU ball. Roland gets a layup and the foul, and he'll have a throw to give the Rams the lead again. Missed it....we're tied.

3 minutes to go. Thomas just destroys Roland down low for the dunk and a free throw attempt. 3 point lead for Mason. "George Mason can see the glass slipper"- JD, Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!

Thomas back to the line with the chance to put Mason up 5 as Jimmy Dykes talks about some sort of alchemist experiment. Shut up Jimmy.....there's two minutes left. Two throws for Mason.....5 point lead.

Dre Smith tries to get fancy and turns the ball over and Maynor gets a layup plus an additional point. 57-55 Mason......another steal by Maynor!!! It's tied. 5 points in 11 seconds as he picks Norwood at mid-court and coasts in for the easy layup.

Out of the timeout Mason misses a three.....under a minute now. VCU gets a huge hoop from Maynor on the drive and Mason calls a Timeout with 40 seconds left. GMU is out of timeouts.

Mason Ball. Campbell is rejected by Fameni, but Mason retains possession. Timeout VCU with 30.5 seconds left.

WHOA OH! LIVING ON A PRAYER!!! (The unofficial anthem of GMU)

"George Mason has to get the ball in now"- JD, No really?!?!?!

Missed three for Mason, and Monroe somehow picks up an intentional foul on Maynor. Just a dumb play with 19 seconds left. Not looking good for Cinderella. Maynor hits the first, and then the second. 61-57 VCU's Ball.....that should be game. Walker is fouled on the inbounds, and goes to the line.

I told you Monroe was the player to watch. Maybe for different reasons, but never the less. VCU up 6. Norwood hits a two, but that won't be enough. Walker fouled again. Walker hits both and that's it.

65-50 VCU......The Rams crush Cinderella's Glass Slipper and they're going dancing.

(Update: Something's come up so I'm not going to be doing the Zags-Santa Clara Game. Sorry to disappoint anyone.....all three of you commenters from last game.)

No one likes Gunston. No one. Just look at that picture. That guy is actually trying to elbow him out of his space.

I am going to be immensely pissed if GMU pulls this off. They sucked all season, and now they're going to push someone out of the tournament because they had a good three games.

OK, I admit it - it's mainly that I think they'll push Old Dominion out, and I want them in.

See, to me, you're not cinderella if you make the tournament two years in a row. Now, if they made the tournament and knocked a couple of teams off from the double-digit seed again, I'd call them cinderella.
